章節 51: -

Meeting his six had been a temporary balm, a sweetness that spread cleanly across his wounds. Their presence was a tongue over the burns. Their love and acceptance were proof of a greater union. And Halcyon had been excited to hear it all from the poseidon, famous for prophecies and fortune.

Seraphim was much older than they were. And he was an icon that told legends, and made history.

Seraphim was an oracle that knew only the truth.

Seraphim would tell him that it was all in time, that the ripples were clear, that the seven were meant to be in a pack, together. That his waters, his powers only spoke of the truth. This was not their first life together.

It would not be their last.

And Seraphim could confirm this, could prove this so easily, even if soul marks were not inked on their skin for one another. It didn't matter if they struggled with Rampage that they could not solve for one another. It didn't matter if they didn't seem to be Halcyon's catalyst for transformation.

It was fate that said they were soulmates, no one else. And that made sense. Because it was normal for the strongest, for royalty, for emperors to form an Alpha pack made of aliens from the top ten planets.

Alphas that could withstand rampage, ruts and the power of their fellow elite.

Alphas that were perfect for one another.

They were strung together with golden threads.

Halcyon had listened with bated breath, fingers squeezing around Valentino who was just as ruined. And inside he'd begged that Seraphim would mention Rue, would speak of an elusive final member that was not there in that same room.

But Seraphim continued, and his Halcyon only felt his heart fall, lips quivering.

No soulmate would come from a double-digit planet—weaklings that would surely waste away under their touch. And it was not because they couldn't have a star-crossed romance with a poorer, more fragile being.

But it was because they'd kill them easily. In that same vein, there would be no Omega bound to their pack as useless, weaker lifeforms. Females would only exist as donors, as tools, and as methods to sate their needs temporarily.

And it had been this way for their families for aeons.

Their soulmates would only exist in bodies that were strong enough to withstand their powers. And that made their union—the connection of seven emperors, seven aliens from the best and the deadliest, a pack that made sense.

Their soulmates would only be the Alphas tied together by gold.

He'd regarded them all then with a careful chilling voice that they did not have to question their marks, did not have to think that coincidence meant that there could be another in the pack. His eyes had stayed on Halcyon and Valentino, knowing of their infatuations.

There were only seven in the waters of truth.

Seraphim had proven that theory easily during their first Rut together as a pack. His cock was warm in Halcyon's belly, trickles of pre-cum making his body shivery with spurts of heat, like kerosene jerked over flame. He'd been truly sated for the first time in his life, surrounded by his six. His Rut had eased into an acceptable hum, his Rampage dulling.

Halcyon's skin had been soaked in poseidon, and yet it did not kill him, just as Seraphim's own body did not scream prey to Halcyon's ares beast. Nor did Dante with his fingers that robbed life from all bodies, or Levi with his fire, Kieran with his light, Valentino with his blades of wind, and the shards from Altair's feathers.

It might hurt, and there might be stings and bruises. A spicy ache when he'd first tasted the deepest parts of them, a numbness from the toxins. But just as he could not kill them, no one could kill him, their Alphas made sure of that, purring content and pleased. Their souls made sure of that.

They were soulmates, and that was true because the seven were the only beings in the world who could stand one another. And that was fate. Seraphim had curled a finger under Halcyon's chin then, coaxed their eyes to lock when he'd finally sobbed of an Alpha he'd been in love with.

Rue. Rue who was his and Valentino's. Their Rue.

Seraphim had sighed. Rue was from a port of all things, a lawless place with no true citizenship. He might be dizzying smart, and might hold some kind of command over Halcyon's animals. But he held no aura, did not have a scent that was pleasant nor an ability that could kill. He was fleshy, powerless, and weak.

Halcyon had protested that theory because it was Rue that had sparked his change from prey to predator, as soulmates did for an artemis. And he'd argued that Rue must be their eighth. Despite his origins, his weak species that had no true name, Rue could be powerful enough.

But their eldest had silenced him with a smile. Rue was merely an anomaly that sparked a reaction in his body. Surely, Seraphim had reasoned to Halcyon then. He'd met one of them before Rue, had seen Valentino in the halls, Dante at the ball, Altair in the crowd.

It was all coincidence that Rue had seemed to spark that change.

And Rue did not exist in the water, was not an Alpha in their lives.

His moon was a secret sort of love, hidden behind the clouds.

Halcyon knew that regardless of what Seraphim said he was on alert to fight and kill because his moon had strayed. Halcyon could no longer return to his bunny, to the prey animals that sat deep within his soul. He was always a protector until he had Rue safe.

He would always be a predator until his moon allowed him to be prey.

The answer to all his problems was simple—acceptance. Rue's cum in his hole, Rue in his arms. Rue who'd kiss him with a heart that mimicked the beat of his own. But Rue wouldn't allow it for him, wouldn't give in.

And that had clouded Halcyon's head with rage, rage so thick he'd feared he'd break his neck and take him all the wrong ways, take what he wanted from Rue like an animal. But Halcyon supposed there were reasons why he remained as a predator, why he remained in the heat of the kill.

He knew now as he regarded Rue after the years, his Alpha whispering reminders of that command. But he could remain, could stand before Rue.

For his Rue was now weakened, with an odd sweetness of Poseidon on his fingers—Seraphim's cum that he'd declared should only be for his soulmates and would only be for them once they could all withstand it. Valentino's Rampage spinning on his fingers. Levi's saliva was deep in the scars. Rue was, weaker, smelled worse, and tasted awful.

He hadn't smelled like this in the past, mildew and rot. He used to be like wet fabric and dirt.

This had Halcyon's brows furrowing, confusion flickering.

Rue needed a bodyguard; Rue needed his protector. But Rue laughed, laughed like he'd just told him that the world was falling, and he had two dicks growing out of his eyes. Because what he'd proposed was absurdity coloured in a rose-pink glaze.

Halcyon supposed that was true too, he was after all extremely lovesick.

Rue stared up at him, face illuminated gorgeously by the gentle rays of the sun. In the tiny space of their shared dormitory, Halcyon had Rue all for himself. This had his Alpha wagging its tail, begging for a deeper sniff. But one more and he was recoiling as if Rue smelled wrong. He always did.

Rue spoke up then, distracting him from his thoughts. "You've got a screw loose." He shrugged, hands on his hips. "I'm not here to fulfil your big bad Alpha fantasies. And you know me, Hal, I don't need protecting."

"I suppose," Halcyon answered, tilted his head, eyed his prize. "But you need this room."

"Please," Rue blew out a breath, a chuckle on his lips. "I don't need anything."

"It's cheap here," Halcyon murmured, "because of me. I'm paying most of your fees." And that included his school fees, but Halcyon supposed that Rue wouldn't want to know that.

This had his brows twitching, and squinted. "You…Are?"

"Yes," Halcyon nodded. It was pack expense, but the suggestion had been solely Halcyon's. "If you want to consider it as repayment for your help in the past…Then think of it that way."

Rue stared at him then, seeming to ponder his words but doubt clouded his eyes. A shift and Halcyon noted the way he eyed the space where the closet once was. This had Halcyon swallowing hard. He supposed he shouldn't have agreed to its creation.

His mates had wanted to throw a prank, a bit of revenge. And Halcyon had agreed to it only because he'd been a little mad. But there had been a better plan for the reveal, one where he'd hacked through the walls like a bodice-ripping romance novel heroine.

Halcyon would swoop in somehow during the party to rekindle their friendship, potentially woo Rue with his new predator forms and a bit of flowery romance. He'd have convinced Rue that he hadn't known of his predicament, that it was all on his mates. (it wasn't wrong perse, the room had been prepared by his soulmates while he'd been away protecting the universe).

And then they'd make love in their actual room, the one that he'd been carefully preparing and was perfect for Ruts and fuck fests. That room hadn't been ready then (another reason for the closet), but it was now.

But he'd fucked it all up when he'd seen Rue, felt his Alpha tremble and lose its ability to think. Because God, Rue was gorgeous. There had been something about him that smelled good, something about him that had changed.

His eyes were the same, just as gold as his moon, just as full, just as beautiful. But his body was different—softer, more meat on his bones, a little healthier. There were more curves, more lushness, more—

"I don't need your help," Rue interrupted him with a glare. "You'll want something from me, want me to get on my knees and suck your dick. Is that it?"

There was a snap in his tone, one that had Halcyon growing needy to appease. But the suggestion had him blindsided, a rush of heat roaring up his cheeks. Because Rue was right, he did want him to suck his dick. And now his thoughts were shrouded with the dreams of a wet mouth around his erection.

But a second look at the twitch of Rue's body language told Halcyon that it wouldn't be the right thing to say.
