Bella did not contact even one of her friends before she left Red House at ten in the evening. Reef was no longer at home. He left the house as soon as Bella entered her room. Bella heard the sound of Reef's car leaving the courtyard, so she packed early. She changed her sleeping clothes into clothes suitable for traveling. A cotton shirt, sweater and warm corduroy pants. She put her high heels in her suitcase and put on her sneakers. She had to dress comfortably because she would be driving to Portland in the middle of the night air, then immediately looking for a flight that was still available.

Anywhere, she thought. I can fly anywhere to avoid Reef if he returns home early and finds me gone. Reef would probably call all their friends to no avail, then decide to follow her to the airport. Therefore she had to leave immediately by any route that would allow her to just transit and continue her journey to New York.
