The canteen was bustling with people coming and going, noisy and chaotic.
Li Beize, holding his tray, approached the two as if he was an old acquaintance, his peach-blossom eyes squinted, his voice leisurely, "Dr. Li, Miss Nian, the canteen is crowded, do you mind if we share a table?"
Nian Yuyu and Li Mingran were sitting at a four-person table, with seats empty on both sides of them.
Li Mingran looked at Nian Yuyu, somewhat embarrassed.
After two seconds, he finally replied, "We don't mind, please sit."
Li Beize raised an eyebrow at Chu You, "Dr. Chu, come sit here."
After saying that, he directly sat down next to Li Mingran, giving up the seat beside Nian Yuyu.
Feeling the approach of footsteps, Nian Yuyu's hand holding her chopsticks unconsciously tightened, her fingertips turning white.
She hadn't expected to really meet Chu You here.
Chu You's cool gaze paused on the slightly stiff Nian Yuyu for a second before placing his tray to the left of Nian Yuyu and sitting down beside her.
Their coat corners brushed together, and Nian Yuyu hurriedly gathered her woolen coat, quietly pressing her legs together.
As the four settled down, the atmosphere became slightly awkward.
Nian Yuyu, without lifting her head, took small bites of her food, somewhat regretting having agreed to meet Li Mingran here.
Just as she was thinking, Li Beize dominated the conversation.
"Dr. Li and Miss Nian know each other?"
Just now when he went to find Chu You for lunch, he hadn't seen Nian Yuyu yet, but Chu You's gaze had already fallen upon her.
"We... are on a blind date." Li Mingran glanced at Nian Yuyu. Being an honest man, he told the truth,
After he spoke, Nian Yuyu buried her head even lower.
While sitting beside her, Chu You's cool gaze intensified.
Only Li Beize, seemingly oblivious to everything, looked at Nian Yuyu with an exaggerated expression on his handsome face, "Miss Nian is so young to be going on blind dates already? Are you even twenty years old?"
Nian Yuyu, "...I'm twenty-four years old."
"Oh." Li Beize drew out the vowel sound, meaningfully glanced at Chu You across the table, then turned his attention back to Li Mingran, "Dr. Li, you are twenty-seven this year, right? You're two years younger than Dr. Chu."
Although he didn't know his exact age or what the relationship between him and Chu You was, Li Mingran nodded, picking up the conversation, "Yes, I'm twenty-seven this year."
"Three years difference, that's pretty good, not quite the old cow eating young grass situation." Li Beize joked, bumping Chu You under the table, making a double entendre.
Nian Yuyu, "..."
Li Mingran, "..."
Knowing Li Beize was usually a bit offbeat, Li Mingran could only take it as a joke.
Recalling how Li Beize called Nian Yuyu 'Miss Nian', he turned to the girl in front of him, his voice clear, "Miss Nian knows Dr. Li?"
Before Nian Yuyu could answer, Li Beize chimed in first, "Miss Nian is one of Dr. Chu's patients. We actually met her by coincidence before."
"Quite fateful."
As he said it, he turned to Chu You, deliberately asking him, "Right, Dr. Chu?"
The man with a cool demeanor hummed a response, the first sound uttered at the dining table.
Hearing his voice, the somewhat absent-minded Nian Yuyu finally snapped back to reality, her nervousness tinged with a bit of anticipation.
Was his answer just now to Li Beize's first question or the last one?
Across the table, Li Beize looked at Chu You with a smile that wasn't quite a smile, struggling to maintain his dignity.
And Li Mingran, still oblivious, cheerfully added, "That's quite a coincidence."
About fifteen minutes passed, and the meal was drawing to a close.
Li Mingran had to go back to work overtime. As he looked at Nian Yuyu in front of him, he couldn't help but sigh inwardly and spoke with a hint of apology, "Miss Nian, I have to go back for overtime. I have a day off tomorrow, so I'll invite you for another meal then."
"No need, you go back to your work," Nian Yuyu raised her head, a faint smile on her face, "Today was... pretty nice."
This time, Li Beize, sitting beside them, finally didn't interrupt, only silently nudging Chu You under the table.
Chu You glanced at him with cold and sharp eyes, carrying a warning.
Hearing Nian Yuyu's tactful rejection, Li Mingran felt disheartened, knowing today's date was a bust.
He quite liked Nian Yuyu, which was a pity.
In a gentlemanly fashion, he offered warmly, "Then let me walk you out."
Upon finishing, Li Beize butted in, "Miss Nian knows the way out, you hurry back to your work, the patients are waiting for you."
He held a finished plate in one hand and slung the other around Li Mingran's shoulder, forcefully leading him away.
"Just so happens I'm on the night shift, so we can go back together."
Unable to resist, Li Mingran was led away, feeling a bit resentful.
He thought that the failure of today's blind date with Nian Yuyu was mostly Li Beize's fault—a perfectly good person, ruined by a mouth!
In the blink of an eye, only Nian Yuyu and Chu You were left sitting side by side at the dining table.
Fortunately, there were still many people dining around, which mitigated some of the awkwardness.
Standing up with an empty plate in hand, Nian Yuyu didn't dare to look directly at the man beside her, only glancing out of the corner of her eye, her voice soft and tinged with nervousness, "Dr. Chu, I'm going to leave first."
Without waiting for Chu You's response, she quickly left with her empty plate.
Chu You sat behind the dining table, his gaze lingering on Nian Yuyu's retreating figure, his calm dark eyes darkening slightly.
He had just picked up his phone when the screen lit up with a new message.
Li Beize:[Seize the opportunity!]
--
Stepping out of the hospital's main entrance and feeling the biting cold, the heat from Nian Yuyu's ears quietly faded.
The sky, which had been bright, was now tinged with darkness, and the streetlights on either side of the road lit up, casting a warm yellow halo.
Nian Yuyu exhaled, her breath forming a misty white cloud that dissipated into the night air.
She checked her phone—it was a little past six.
At this hour, it was the rush hour. She hesitated between calling a taxi and taking the subway.
As she pondered, a black Mercedes rolled out of the hospital parking lot and slowly stopped in front of her.
The window lowered, revealing Chu You's finely chiseled, cool face.
He looked at Nian Yuyu, his voice clear and cool, like a rippling mountain spring, "Get in the car."
Nian Yuyu was momentarily stunned by his good looks, her body reacting faster than her mind. By the time she realized it, she had already opened the door and sat in the passenger seat.
Seeing her dazed and frightened expression, Chu You withdrew his gaze, the corners of his lips lifting in a faint, fleeting smile.
The rearview mirror reflected his deep black eyes now warmed slightly, and without a word, he quietly started the car.
In the passenger seat, Nian Yuyu tightened her grip on the safety belt in front of her, her pale face still showing a hint of bewilderment. How had she ended up in Chu You's car?
She blinked, a tinge of embarrassment flashing in her clear eyes.
She might have been dazzled by his looks once again!
Inside the dimly lit cabin, awkwardness silently transformed into heart-fluttering ambiguity.
