When I returned to the castle, I went straight to Chantal’s suite, eager to see Lycia. I just hoped she still wasn’t blaming me for her parents’ deaths. I may be a beast, but I’d never kill anyone she loved.

“She’s sleeping.” Chantal opened the door before I knocked, obviously having sensed I was coming. Witches are freaky that way.

“How is she?” I didn’t stop to talk, heading through her suite and straight for her spare room.

“She’s fine.” Chantal sighed, her eyes filled with concern. “Just make sure she doesn’t overexert herself.” Her lips forming a straight line as her eyes turned dark. “Also, make sure she doesn’t get any more surprises.”
