章節 33: Chapter 33: Return

(Oliver POV)

As I looked at the stupefied crab in front of me, I had to restrain myself from laughing out loud again.

This was meant to be a serious conversation, but after he asked me that question, with such a grim look in his eyes, I couldn't help but let it out.

We stared at each other for a few more seconds before I took a bite out of the snake below me while maintaining contact, causing Shelton to close his eyes and sigh.

Opening them back up after a few seconds he looked at me, "Oliver..."

I continued munching and kept on hearing the sound of me gaining mutagen points as I feasted.

"Are you really on the verge of evolution?" He asked.

Haha! The poor guy looks like he wants to cry, at this rate I'm actually gonna start to feel bad for him!

Is he seriously not happy about being smaller than me?

Externally however, I simply nod in confirmation to his question to which he closes his eyes yet again.

Lowering his eyes and scratching his chin, he contemplates.

This is the problem for me. While I definitely trust Shelton, we're simply not strong enough to really protect ourselves from the world.

That means that if I was to tell him any of my secrets such as my system or my reincarnation, not only could that change our relationship which I wouldn't want, but it could also jeopardize our safety.

Thus, I really don't want want him to find out about it, so I need to give him some sort of excuse.

"Hey Shelton... You said that the flood makes creatures grow quicker right? Maybe my growth is because of this?"

Shelton continued pondering before speaking, "No, your speed is still too fast for this to be the flood. Plus, other creatures should be able to grow similarly."

Oliver stated, as he continue stroking his shell.

"I think we should ask the elder's what's going on. Hopefully they just missed your tide mark, right?" He said as we finished up our snacks.

This meal was really good, not only because of it's taste, but also because all of the mutagen points that I'm gaining could be used soon!

Despite the trouble that I've caused for myself because of my pseudo-yellow ranked evolution, I still can't help but shake with excite.

It's evolution!

How can I not be excited?

I'm gonna be reaching the orange tier!

We gathered all of the remaining bones from the snake's skeletons, excluding the two skulls of the snakes we caved in, and the neck bones of the one that had it's head twisted off by Shelton.

Shoving them into the smaller bags we had was a little difficult though. Yeah we still brought bags which included mainly some food, and two plants which were known to help with the regenerative process, but these weren't the large food bags which we usually had.

We didn't come here to grab food for the tribe after all. We came here to hunt for the Synok tribe member's and level up ourselves.

That makes me wonder... Is the Synok Tribe going to notice that we killed these snakes?

I mean, obviously they're gonna notice that they're gone from the tribe, and most likely dead if they don't ever return.

But if they find out that it was us are they gonna get more mad or something?

Don't get me wrong, I get that the Carak tribe and Synok tribe are enemies, but I still don't want to paint a target on my back, ok?

I mentally shrug as I calm myself down. These guys shouldn't have been anything species. Maybe if they were from the Carak tribe they would have been well known, but from what Shelton has told me the Synok tribe's average strength is around the peak orange to low yellow tier, so these guys were actually probably a bit worse than average.

Plus the Synok tribe is also apparently a lot bigger than the Carak tribe, having more than 1000 members!

Most of them are snakes, but it is also known that they have some other species such as eels, turtles, and even a few alligators!

As we tread back with our spoils I take another glance at my status and dish out my new stat points.

<Tier: 2 (Red Rank)>

<Unassigned Stat Points: 0>

<Mutagens: 178>

<Skill Points: 9>

I decide to distribute it solely to vitality and magic. I'm already strong enough as it is at the current moment, so what I want to do is increase how long I can use my trump card for, and just make me harder to kill in general.

I think that vitality would be a better stat for becoming more difficult to hurt or rather kill but maybe I should go for endurance instead...?

The way I picture it is that endurance makes my skin tougher and thus harder to kill, while vitality makes me 'have' more skin or just means that I can take more damage total.

In that case wouldn't I want endurance more than vitality?

I'm certainly no masochist, so if I can decrease the amount of injuries I get over being able to simply take more injuries I'm all for it.

It's no matter though, what's done is done. I can always increase it when I level up next.

Also, looking through my status, I can see that quite a few skills leveled up. My ink cloud, camouflage, and shredding sill all increased by one, and my tentacle grab skill leveled up by 2 from fighting those guys as well!

Happy with my new footing, I exit out of the menu as me and Shelton decide to call it a day and rest out in the corals.

We dig out a small hole for the both of us, and cover it with some spare seaweed and a few broken pieces of coral from the battle earlier leaving us with a decently sized, yet not too comfortable temporary home.

We talk for a few minutes and before we know it, sleep begins to get the best of us.

...

The next morning.

While the journey back isn't necessarily what I would consider 'long', it's sadly not something that someone should do more than like 3 times at day at most. At that point it would just be better to stay out rather than coming back every time.

Once we arrived back at the enclave, we went straight back to the hunting station to turn in our merits. Once we arrive, we meet the same crab who approved us of our Synok Tribe request, and before we can even show him our spoils, he begins to laugh at us.

"Hahahahah! You guys already gave up? What? You must've encountered a hunting party from them and realized that you were no match!"

"Hahahaha! I told you so! You should have realized that both of you aren't as gr-"

Thump!

Shelton slings over the bags we were carrying onto the rock in front of both us, and the crab, as he pauses and looks at them.

"What're these?" He asks opening them.

"Just our winnings." Shelton says, as his tone is laced heavily with sourness as he was still thinking about my impending evolution.

As the crab peeps inside of the bag and sees one of the two snake skulls we were able to bring in, the rest of his gloating speech is forgotten in his mind as he pulls out all of the bones in humiliation.

Eventually he finished his punishment and with the 4 mostly intact skeletons of the snakes we killed, he asked us a few quick questions about our hunt in order to submit for the report before we're good to go, as he begins to file the request.

He didn't finish quite as cocky as when we first arrived, but his confidence did come back a little when we said that they were all orange rank.

Still though, despite that he didn't laugh at us anymore.

Once we've finished that, I quickly mull over the fact that I need to spend some of my merits soon as I've just been saving them up aside from using them to get some food from the feeding cove.

Our next destination is yet again, the elder's chambers.

I don't know how I quite feel about this place because sometimes it feels like a place for those who are at the top of society, which it really is at least for those in the tribe, and at other times I feel like I'm going here because I got detention from doing something wrong.

Walking in, we see a different yet lighter colored crab attendant near the front rock (desk). As we mention that we wish to have a meeting with elder Carn, she casually talks up to us as she leads us back to his room which we both already know the path to at this point, and I learn that she is also yet another wife of one of the elders.

Upon arriving, the shinier crab leaves us as we enter through the curtains of kelp into elder Carn's room.

"Oliver, Shelton! I heard that both of you already managed to hunt down a squad! Well done!" He immediately congratulates us, as I am confused to how he already knows about our success despite us coming straight from the hunting sector to his chambers.

'Magic items maybe?' I know that they have some forms of longer distance communications. Hell it's said one of the elders is actually a sound mage and is capable of speaking to someone from kilometers away.

"But what brings both of you here? You know you're still allowed to keep on hunting those groups right? That form I gave you wasn't a one time thing."

Shelton shakes his head denying the older crab's stance as he opens his mouth, "Actually elder Carn the reason we're here is because Oliver is ready to evolve again."

...

I swear I can almost feel the hole boring into me as the senior crab stares straight through me.
