章節 28: Message: XXVII

The darkness had already taken over the evening sky when Aria was coming back to her house. Well, that day could have gone better, but she didn't really have anything against the way it did anyway. The French cheerleader was pretty much disgusted by her behavior at the crime scene, the technician probably didn't know what to do or say, and Adaman, during the autopsy, was actually, as before, kind and talkative. Nothing new.

Callaghan stretched her back when she landed on the pavement after jumping over the fence. Parkour was something she was doing as a hobby, but at the same time was keeping her in shape. Come on, those muscles didn't make themselves out of her sitting on a couch.

She turned left on the street she was living by, heading to her house.

The more she approached, the more she felt something was off. She couldn't tell – the air seemed to be suffocating, the atmosphere thicker, even the night breeze was heavier than it was supposed to be. She frowned, closer to the building now. Something was not right, but she couldn't tell what was that. She just felt it, and she didn't like that for a source of information.

She slid closer to the door, but didn't open it. Everything seemed to look like she left it. Aria decided to go around the house, though she was aware that if there was anybody, she would have to fight them, if they were up to no good. On the other hand, she knew how to do it to make it look like it was just the necessary defense.

She went behind the house, carefully looking around. The only light source were two lanterns standing on each side of the building. It wasn't much, the surroundings were dim and almost threatening, but she had been living there for a long time by then, and she was pretty much ready for anything.

Callaghan rolled her sleeves, feeling the breeze on her skin, cooling her a bit. She was treading carefully, step by step, looking around and trying to see anything abnormal in the darkness. Trees were rustling on the wind, some rodents threw noises here and there in the grass... but apart from that, nothing happened. Everything seemed to be just fine. She circled the house and then ended up on the path to her front door. Nothing. She frowned again.

"Something's fishy." She mumbled to herself, taking out her keys and opening the door carefully. She didn't really feel anything weird, at least not at first.

Then she got to the living room and switched on the light. In the moment the bulb shed some light to the place, she swallowed, feeling a cold shiver running down her spine. She closed her eyes, letting out a very loud, heavy sigh, covering her face with her palm, as if she was praying for that not to be true, and then she glanced at the table once again.

It was still there. Along with a very strong, metallic scent.

She pulled out her phone, still not being able to take her eyes off that shit.

"911, what's your emergency?" she heard in the headphone.

"I would want to report a murder." She stated calmly, looking into very blue, yet very dead eyes.
