章節 2: Away For A While
It was a Saturday morning, Girra had woken up and was preparing the children for their kid’s club meeting that held every weekend, although I was against these meetings because to me, weekends were for rest, Girra insisted on it, saying that it will help build their skills. Molly and Solly would go every Saturday, for their guitar and keyboard lessons and even though I saw it as stressing the children, they enjoyed it and always looked forward to it. I would have dropped them off if not for the conference I was to attend, GECA had organized a workshop in London for all doctors in different fields, it was a workshop that held for 3 days and I had to attend it because it would be of great help to me, for my project.
'Hello hun, here's your meal, hope you have a nice trip' Girra said, as she gave me a peck on the neck. She was happy that, I at least told her where I would be for the next three days. The project I ran at the laboratory had put a kind of friction between our relationship because I always kept late nights without really explaining to her where I was or what I was doing, at least I knew she'd be safe if she didn't know about it.
'thanks hun, you're the best. I promise to make it up to you when I come back'
'You better do, cause you've really been distant these days' She said with a wide smile, kissing me on the forehead. Girra and I were quite close, we had known each other right from high school and we went to the same college, even though she did a different course from mine, our bond was special. She studied law while I studied medical laboratory. I remember back then, she was dating a guy called Savy and I hated it a lot because I had told her about my intentions of getting married to her, but we got distant when I went to pursue my masters at Cambridge University, back then there were no phones and we could only communicate through letters that most times didn't reach the actual destination.
Girra had packed my clothes and I was ready to go to the airport. On my way to the airport I remembered the last time I went to an airport, it was with Girra. We were going on our honeymoon and were both excited to leave the city together. How time flies, I thought to myself, as I realized that I had spent my whole life after marriage in a lab, I wished something more exciting came up. My thought was disrupted by a vibration in my pocket, it was my phone.
'Hey bro' It was Balley on the phone.
'Hey, where are you?'
'I'm on my way to the airport, what about you?'
'I'm at the airport already and you'd better get here fast if you want to catch the flight.' Balley was always on time, he'd be the first at work, most times I attempted to get there before him, but he always beat me to it, I sometimes thought he was competing with the hospital manager.
'Alright, I'll surely catch up' I said, hanging up the call.
The trip to me, was something away from the normal, it gave me a feeling of when I got an experiment right or a chemical reaction came out the way I wanted, but the feeling was a little different, it was a different kind of excitement.
I got to the airport, only to see more of my hospital co_ workers than I expected. The flight was chartered specifically for medical personnels around the city. As I walked in, moving towards the check_in counter, I saw Balley, just then he turned and our eyes met.
'Hey bro, you made it' He said, as he hugged me excitedly.
'This trip is gonna be lit bro... My best bro and I, doing what we love' he looked at me excitedly, punching me a little on the chest. To him it was a just a trip, but to me it was an adventure with a lot of benefits. I mean, I left New Town city after so many years and also, I hoped the trip would be of great contribution back at my lab, I couldn't wait to board the plane. Standing there, we seemed like little children excited for candy, someone seeing us would wonder why we were so excited, but at that point in time, only us understood the significance of that trip.
I stood on the line to realize that Jacy was in front of the queue, this came more as a shock to me, I thought she'd stay back for these three days to check on the lab. I had planned to call her, but it skipped my mind. I would have probably remembered when 'I arrived at London,' was the thought that came to my mind when Balley tapped me.
'Hey bro, isn't that Jacy? what is she doing here?'
'Whatever it is, I hope she has a very good explanation.' I stepped out of the queue already, when I realized that I could miss my turn to submit the boarding pass. That was Jacy's only saviour that day because I was boiling with anger, I had it up to my neck with her. Sometimes I felt that she took advantage of me cause I didn't pay much attention to her lapses and inconsistencies. At that point I began to wonder who would look out for the lab while I'm away. My thought was disrupted again by Balley's voice.
'Are you just going to stand there?' Balley spoke my mind, because I was about to get some explanations and I wouldn't have taken it lightly with her, but I had to let it be, it wasn't necessary.
'No bro, we'll deal with this in London' I replied, as Balley nodded in agreement, he understood what the "we" meant. We normally worked together when we had a mischievous plan or wanted to do something out of the normal.
After some few minutes, we boarded the plane and got into the fight, but I felt a little bit of nostalgia, when I remembered Girra and the kids, I wished it was a family trip, it would have been nice to be with them. But anyways, I had promised to make it up to Girra when I came back from the London. All these made me realize how much time the project in the lab had taken from me.
We arrived London after 2 hours of flight, just then, Jacy came to my mind. I was calm now to face her, as I looked around the airport to find her.
'You okay bro?' Balley asked.
'Yea, I'm fine, it's just that.....'
'Wow...... this is huge, I think these guys are loaded bro,' Balley interrupted. We were out of the airport, when I looked to see a black SUV limo parked outside, for a moment I thought it wasn't for us, I wondered why GECA would make our transport so luxurious, until I heard the chauffeur that stood in front of it: 'Your'e welcome, GECA transport here, welcome to London.' He said this with a very welcoming smile. At that instant, we recognized that he was our driver and gave him our luggage. I wondered how the SUV would contain about 60 of us, when I looked behind it, to see three more SUV's. Indeed this was huge, if GECA put all these together, they probably wanted to achieve something.
The interiors of the SUV was what we would call "lit". It had up to 24 seats and was very well equipped with televisions and drink bars inside, there were touches of leather on the seats, it also had wood trim and cup holders. This seemed more like a luxury trip, it had more things than we imagined. The journey was longer than I thought it would be, at this time the mumblings from everyone had reduced, as we drove through the tree lined road. We could see the trees, as the tinted windows gave us a view of everything outside. It seemed we were going into a vegetative area.
'Hey bro, you seeing what I'm seeing? ' Balley said, staring me in the face.
'what?'
'This is looking like another journey.' He said, with sarcasm in his voice, he was already tired of the journey, we thought we were just going to arrive at our destination after few minutes of driving. Just then, the limo pulled off and after some seconds, the chauffeur opened the door, letting us out of it, this gave us a better view of what was in front of us. It was a large building, it looked like a suite but a bit larger, it was a three storey building, with a bold 'St. REGUS' written at the top. All of us stood in awe, as we never expected something so large and outstanding, for where we were going to lodge.
'Hey bro, I think we've seen it all.' Balley said, with that stupid look he always had on his face, when he was excited about something.
'Snap out of it bro, it's just for a while.' I said tapping his back, as I shook my head facetiously.
