I got Hope down to sleep in her crib and snuck back up to my room to change.

Sliding out the drawer with a slight squeak of wood on wood, I saw the clothes I hadn’t worn in a while, neatly folded in a row.

Picking carefully, I pulled out a white cotton dress most like the one I’d worn that fateful day I’d come to visit Carl but found Ellis instead.

Getting down to nothing I put on a white cotton set of undies, which I knew Ellis preferred. There was something about them he found to be pure.

Finally, on the floor of the closet, I found just the sort of ballet flats I wore back then at the tender age of twenty before I knew much about anything.

Tiptoeing down the stairs trying not to wake the kids, I found the familiar hall that led to the dungeon.
