“Who is this?” I asked, only Anthony and Ellis ever called me Livy.

“We have yet to be formally introduced, but my name is Raul Diaz. You might have heard of me.”

“I have,” I said, giving nothing away and doing my best to remain calm.

“I know Bethany usually talks to Ellis, but I wanted to speak with you directly and see if we can’t work something out.”

“How so?” I asked, keeping my tone even.

“Well, Bethany is indisposed on account of your family. I understand she may have been a bit heavy-handed before.”

“I wouldn’t call threatening my babies heavy-handed, more suicidal.”

“I can appreciate that,” he said. “This can all go away if Carl keeps his mouth shut. If not, well, the collateral damage could be catastrophic.”

“I quite agree, oh, or did you mean for me?”

“W—what do you mean?” he asked, sounding a little surprised.

“Only that I will kill anyone who threatens my babies for any reason.”
