Triggered by the words “bad man” I took Olivia by her good arm, and pulled her towards the kitchen, away from the risk of little ears. The boys were in their room hanging out and wouldn’t be around for a while.

“What was that about a bad man?” I asked.

Olivia tried to look away, but I wouldn’t allow it. Making her look at me with a hand on her chin.

“Talk to me, pumpkin.”

I hated using my dominant voice, but there was no other way I could get her to talk to me when she was being so evasive.

“Okay, Daddy,” she murmured, close to tears.

“Tell me everything that happened.”

“Everything?”

“Every last detail,” I insisted.

“I took the kids to the zoo this morning. At least that was the plan.”

“Did you take Luke with you?”

“No, he wanted to go, to drive us down at least. I said that wasn’t needed. I guess I was so happy after everything that happened. I got over-confident and didn’t think anything would happen.”
