章節 21: Ch 21. Floor 1 - A Player and It's a Girl?

Without any warning whatsoever, the long-awaited apocalypse was here.

"This tower..."

I didn't have words to describe it. I thought that at least the tower would give a timer, you know, just like the tutorial, but no. This time it came out of nowhere.

"If I knew one thing, it's that the apocalypse is coming."

Other than that—when, how, why... all three are unknown. The sudden start to the quest made me a bit destabilized, but I was fully prepared. Without any more delay, I took out the short sword from the scabbard, held it, and got ready for the upcoming zombies.

Gaaa!

With an inhuman roar, the zombies noticed the sound and rushed like hungry animals, ready to pounce on me. "This is really scary." These zombies looked terrifying! Their skin had aged quite a bit, making it dark, and the mix of blood and flesh from eating humans... these were true zombies, unlike the tutorial.

"But..." I am not terrified. The experiences of fighting goblins, the tutorial, and my encounter with Saeko—all three were fruitful. Even without needing my innate skill, 3rd Person's Perspective, I am not nervous at all. The only thought that makes my heart race is the fact that I am about to kill someone.

Phooo~

Releasing a sigh, I controlled myself. No need to get nervous. "Just think of them like monsters, Ren. No need to overthink." In matters like this, when chaos takes place, overthinking is a liability. No need to think about the zombies as former humans or to consider my actions as murder.

All I need to do is simple: survive. And the rule for survival is simple as well.

"Do or die."

The first zombie of the group rushing toward me was just a hand away, stretching its arms out, ready to grab and pounce on me.

Do you know the best way to improve in fights?

It's to fight.

Humans improve when they fight, even at the risk of their own lives. And I've done it three times. I fought goblins, I fought zombies (through the plants), and I fought Saeko. Up to this point, I've gotten used to fighting.

Despite its speed, the fact that I climbed the tower and completed the tutorial has made me stronger than my past self. And beyond just physical strength, my experiences have upgraded me. Without needing my skill, I could see the fast zombie's movements slow enough to react on my own.

"Now."

Before its hands could reach me, I swung the sword, attacking the zombie's hands.

Srrring!

With a shine from the sun's reflection, the slash appeared as a thin white line. The sword came down, and with it, the extended hands of the zombie seeking me.

Thud!

The severed hands fell, and blood spurted from the stumps, splashing onto my face and body.

"It's really good that it's not green."

Goblin blood freaked me out. The red color actually calms me down.

"I must be insane to say that."

But what can I do? People change after different experiences. I have changed too, all for the sake of my dreams. And speaking of dreams...

"Saeko~ I'm coming back as fast as possible!"

I need to hurry and meet with Saeko. And soon after, I need to head to Fujimi High School to recruit the canon girls.

"My dream… I'm coming!"

With a shout, I struck the sword, decapitating the disabled zombie in one stroke. The head tumbled down, and the body fell, marking the end of the zombie.

"Graa!"

But instead of fear, all I got was more responses. The zombies approached in numbers, and I gripped my hilt tighter. What if there are even more?

[Flow Activated!]

The flows came to me—left, right, above... all the movements of the zombies came into view. I could feel all of it.

"You zombies…"

Putting strength into my legs, I rushed forward, finding myself in the midst of the group of zombies. Without any more hesitation, I gripped the hilt and slashed all around, creating a circle around me.

[Ren's Exclusive Sword Strike – Merry-Go-Round!]

"...Can't stop me from completing my dreams!"

With a gleam, the zombies' intact necks were slashed, and they were unaware their heads were no longer theirs. The heads fell like dominos, and the wriggling bodies staggered for a few steps before collapsing at my feet. I stood, sheathing the sword despite the remaining zombies, just to strike a cool pose.

"Sigh! I am too cool. If there were a girl here, she might have fallen for me."

No doubt, my chuunibyou and narcissism were kicking in. But what I didn't expect was that a girl was actually there.

"Kobayashi-kun?"

"Huh?"

Who's calling me? I turned my head and looked at the parked car beside the road. That's where the sound came from. I saw a silhouette slowly stepping out, trembling, from behind the car. It's a girl; that much is clear from her voice. She seems terrified. But who wouldn't be?

'I'm the only one who isn't afraid here.'

But the vital point is that she's a player, meaning she's from the same world as mine, and she even knows my name, which means she's likely from the same school.

'Who is she?'

I stayed alert, as in the apocalypse, humans can be more dangerous than zombies. The fact that players have skills makes me even more cautious. The girl finally stepped out of the car, revealing herself. My eyes widened as I lowered my sword. This girl... she's someone too familiar. She's one of the girls I saved during the first gate incident when goblins spawned in the classroom.

The heroine of an anime, the cute and famous girl, and also our class rep…

"Hori-san?!"

There stood the trembling Kyouko Hori, the female protagonist of the anime Horimiya. And without a doubt, she's one of the girls I had my eyes on since the time I reincarnated. Looking at her, staring at me with hopeful eyes, I knew that my cool pose had worked.

'Man… I love the apocalypse.'
