When Rose woke up the next morning, she saw breakfast had been left for her, much the same way she had been taught to do it in Azkaban. She ate ravenously, despite the lump of worry in her stomach. Her thoughts had been spinning all night, about Scorpius, about her own situation, about how to solve her current predicament. She just wished that all her restless worrying had led to more answers. All she could think of to do was to cooperate with the Ministry here as much as she could, and then hope that her mother, or Uncle Harry was made aware of her situation and was able to fix it. She hated relying too much on others, but it was not like she could break out of prison. That would not help her at all.
When she had finished eating, the man from yesterday, Lagasete, was there again. She didn't like the look on his face, but she had to be polite. This man clearly held the power here and she could not make an enemy of him.
"Sir, please, have you contacted the British Ministry yet?"
"I have. They tell much the same story that you claim. And most of it sounds plausible. But what I don't understand is why you walked with them without resisting on Selja. Why didn't you try to run? If you really were their captive, why no chain or restraint? Or do you claim to have been under a spell?" The way he asked that last question told Rose that that would not work. She took a deep breath to collect her thoughts.
"I was not under a spell. That is why I was captured. I came upon them as they were planning their escape, and they took me along with them so that I wouldn't raise the alarm. They did not even know who I was, as I was in disguise. As for why I walked without resisting, I was given the option of walking by myself or being dragged. I chose to walk. I had no way of escaping on my own and I did not wish to be punished more. I didn't know you were there, though I had a hope someone would find us. All I could have achieved by trying to run was to get myself killed or hurt further. Lestrange had his wand on me the whole time."
"Interesting. Of course, your companions tell a different story. Oh, at first, they tried to say that you were a nobody they just had along for the ride, but they had to come clean eventually. They explained how you were able to open the door for them. How you used your position as the child of the Minister to escape any suspicion. Truly a clever scheme. Just a shame that all the power of the British Minister for Magic is useless here." He leaned in closer to her door. "So, no more tricks from you, Mrs. Malfoy."
Rose just gaped. She had never encountered anything like this. Why did the man not believe her? The way he repeated her name made her feel like that was relevant somehow.
"So, you believe the words of convicted Dark Wizards more than the words of the British Ministry? More than my own words? Please, tell me, what can I do to convince you? I am not who you think I am. I was their captive. Please, if I were their leader, why did I not have a wand? Why did they use me as a shield? Why did he push me towards you instead of protecting me?"
"All valid points. But the man you claim "pushed" you had two wands. One of them could be yours. They knew by then that they were surrounded. They knew that they couldn't escape. That is, unless you could still go free and come back and rescue them later, like you did in Azkaban."
"I did not help them escape in Azkaban!" Rose shouted, desperate. What did this man have against her? Had she done something to him?
"No? Then why were you there? Why did you, of all people, want to go to Azkaban, with the people that have twice now been your captors? Why seek them out again?" Rose bowed her head. She didn't have a good answer to that. There wasn't a good answer. She never should have gone to Azkaban. She knew that now. And because of it, Thomas was dead, and apparently, so were 18 Norwegians.
"No quick reply to that? Well, I'll give you some time to think about it. You will be formally interviewed tomorrow. There will be a representative from the British Ministry present." And without explaining anything more, he was out of her sight again.
Oh God. What could she do now? If he really believed what he had just said, she was in real trouble. If he thought she had fooled her family to such an extent, he would not listen to anything they said. She felt her panic rise again. She could not believe that this was really happening. How could everything have spiralled so far out of her control?
She remembered something Scorpius had said. "The curse of the Malfoy name." She had scoffed at it. But maybe she had to start believing a little. She had never seen anyone so openly dismissing what she had to say. Was this what Draco and Scorpius experienced, every time someone heard their name? Would that carry even to Norway? Was the name of Malfoy that infamous? Scorpius had said that she would be welcome to keep her maiden name, but she had dismissed it. Could the curse really be that strong? Would everyone they met immediately think that they were Dark Wizards? It was hard to believe. But she couldn't think of any other reason why Lagasete believed Lestrange over her. And the name of Lestrange should be just as bad as Malfoy.
She couldn't get any further at the moment. She would have to wait for the formal interview tomorrow. She wondered who the "representative" would be. Probably not her mother, they wouldn't allow that.
