The magic in itself wasn't anything special, but it would be different if it was used continuously. The preservative type magic wad caste upon the slaves at set interval, so that the magic doesn't wear off, this would let the slaves last longer. 

But this magic wasn't omnipotent, it just slowed down the deterioration of a body or object, not stop it. So there were still many slave who died everyday.

Both Zick and Varine had blank expressions making it hard for anyone to know what they were thinking.
