章節 60: She Whose Past Caught Up

A week had passed since Duncan told me what was supposed to happen to us. My kids and I.

I was hopeful we would have more time, but there was something in his voice that made me want to rush things. The transition I mean. Ever since I knew who Fujin was, something in me began to worry.

A number of scrolls started coming at the hotel. Scrolls that were read by the scholars of the Immortals. From Europe to Asia, I knew Claude's ability was rare, but for the gods to use him this early? I started to get mad.

It was Duncan that stepped in. He told all the pantheons to ease with the scrolls or he will be burning them. "I do not care if those have been in your hands eons ago, my son will not be reading any of those without his mother's permission, mine, and his."

I could feel the anger coming out of him when the 50th one arrived at The Belle's doorstep. And while Claude was having fun reading an ancient story Hera had given, the rest was not for kids.

Curses, dark arts, beheading, a spell to cast the world into darkness. There were a number of things a young boy should not be reading. How did we know, Claude's ability had grown, with a touch, he could sense the content without fully reading them. Thus, making things easy for him to see which one is good or not.

I looked outside the window from my office on the second floor of The Belle. The kids were playing with Fall, and Riley's kids. The twins were finally opening up to us. This was the second time they have visited The Belle. Riley would drop them and pick them up later.

I could still see the shadow of pain they endured, the same as their mom.

I heard someone's footsteps approaching me. I sighed, the sound was a bit far. Like it was coming from the stairs that would lead to where I was. How far? Six doors from where I was.

It seems like the change that was happening to me was way quicker.

I took a deep breath and then my eyes widened. This scent. Dang, now I could also detect scents. Not smell mind you, but scents. Smells were a bit different, they were shallow, imagine a perfume that you have sprayed on you. Those only stay on the surface of your skin.

Scents however, were different. It is part of who you are. A part of your essences. Something that sets each person apart. For me to detect those, means my change was at a much deeper level.

Sounds.

Smell.

Other than my natural ability to block the thoughts of the people that the gods loved, I have not developed any special ability. It was a small blessing, but for how long?

"What brings you here, Fujin?" I asked the moment the god of wind entered the room. He was taken aback because I knew it was him. He must have been thinking I would be too preoccupied with my writing.

"Um," he began while he was scratching his head, "Me and Colin would like to go to Riley's with the kids," he continued. I was amused by how he was acting around me. It was Thor and Duncan that told me what happened. All I did was glared at him.

"And?" I replied.

"I would like to ask your permission for Claude and Nicole to join us," he hurriedly said, accompanied by a ninety degree bow to show respect.

I had to stop myself from laughing, the god of wind was bowing at me. A mere mortal?

"Fujin, you do know that you are far higher than me right?"

He nodded without lifting his head, "I know, but Duncan is your mate, and that means…"

"Nothing, not to me," I stepped away from the window and walked to where Fujin was.

I saw him tense, as if he was waiting for me to hit him, so when I placed my hand on his right shoulder, he flinched.

"Fujin," I began, "look at me."

The god of wind slowly raised his head, and did what I had asked. The first thing I saw was fear. Then apprehension. Of what, I have no idea.

"You have my permission," I told him. He was like a book, there were numerous emotions that flashed on it. Happiness, relief, and gladness. But what stayed was the apprehension. "But, you have to tell me, what is wrong."

There was a brief pause, before he opened his mouth, something unexpected happened. The phone that had been gathering dust for the past couple of months began to rang.

I felt a sudden chill run across my skin. The ringing phone was not the phone that was used at The Belle. But the one I reserved for the family I have left behind.

I looked at it, it was placed beside the kids' picture with my younger sister. The only one in my family that I stayed connected to.

"Call me, when something happens. Call me when you miss and want to talk to the kids. They need connection, they will miss you."

Those were the words I told her five years ago.

This phone had only rung a couple of times, and mostly my sister would message me that she would be calling. For it to start ringing…

With cold hands, I answered the call. My knees began to shake and I was about to fall down but Fujin caught me. Even from across the ocean that separates us, I could feel the fear pouring out from her voice.

"Ate, you need to come home. Lola, she is dying. She needs you."
