After securing the beach from their enemies the knights settled down for the night. The Templars used this time to tend to their wounded and rest, for in the morning they would be heading southwest to help Gawain.
" Dorian, how are the soldiers holding up?" Poseidon asked.
Dorian, who had been busy helping tend to the wounds of the nights. Bandaging and stitching them up mostly, had finally finished his work on Sir Tristan.
" Well, most of them are injured badly. And some have been poisoned. Whatever they were fighting got them good. But... They'll live." Dorian explained.
" And Tristan?" Poseidon asked.
" Suffered the worst. His wounds were deep, and the poison got through his system faster than the others. Most likely due to the fact that he fought longer. I don't know if he'll make it. But if he does the chances of him picking up his sword again are next to none. His days as a knight are done." Dorian spoke.
Poseidon nodded and rubbed his face.
" Thank you, Dorian. Keep watch and let me know if anything changes. First thing in the morning you and the rest of the soldiers return to Camelot. You're done fighting." Poseidon told the man.
" Thank you, captain." Dorian replied.
" No thanks necessary. Just make sure to take good care of our men." Poseidon told the man, he then turned and walked away, making his way to the campfire.
Poseidon needed to take a load off, this was a stressful day.
He approached the fire and greeted the men and women sitting around it.
" Hello, Excalibur. I thank you for your help today." Poseidon spoke to the men and women. He sat down next to Betsy Braddock and grabbed a bottle of wine.
" No problem. How is everyone doing?" Betsy asked.
" Well, most of the soldiers are fine. But they've been poisoned. Dorian, our healer, says he can help them and that they'll live. But as for Sir Tristan..." Poseidon sighed heavily and started chugging his drink. " His wounds were more severe than anyone else. His days as a knight are over." Poseidon explained.
" I... Am sorry to hear that. I've heard many tales of the Knights Of The Round Table in otherworld. I'm sure this must be hard for all of you." Betsy spoke.
" I thank you for your help. More than you know." Poseidon spoke.
" So, what is going to happen to the remaining knights?" Jubilee asked.
" I'm sending them home. None of them can fight in their condition." Poseidon replied.
" So, this was all for nothing. We saved your soldiers and yet we have nothing to show for it. Just like I thought." Apocalypse spoke.
" My men are alive. If we hadn't come to help them they'd be dead. All of them." Poseidon replied.
" And Morgan has had a whole day to consolidate her power. Every moment she grows stronger. And now, we most likely no longer have the advantage of surprise. Meaning by the end of this we may all be dead." Apocalypse argued.
Poseidon gripped his bottle so hard it shattered in his hands.
" My men... Are alive right now. Which means they have another chance to live. You may be able to sacrifice the lives of your people. But I am not. I'm sorry this turned out the way it did. But I wouldn't change a thing about it. My men are alive, and we live to fight another day. Be happy you get to see the day of light. Any other time any other place and I would kill you where you stand." Poseidon told the man.
" You, great god. Have the power to end this without much problem. Yet you choose to fight like a man and as a result more people have died. What does that say about you? Coward." Apocalypse replied.
Poseidon, nearly jumped from his seat to throttle the man, but he pulled himself back before he did anything drastic.
" You're right, I do have the power to end this. With one flick of my wrist, I could level all of Britain. And a couple hundred years ago, I might have done just that. But things aren't the way they used to be. There are new buildings and civilizations popping up every day. I can't just throw my power around like I could in the old days. Let me tell you something about me, Apocalypse. I was born a human. I wasn't always a knight; I wasn't always a god. I was human. I lived amongst humans, I know what kind of lives we lived, I know what struggles we suffered, the joys we found. I knew it all. I've experienced the joys of this world. And their terrors. A gift of immortality, I guess. My journey to godhood was one of pain and turmoil, I suffered more that year than I have in my entire life. And when I finally succeeded. When I killed Poseidon, my father, and took his place. Nothing changed. Nothing changed at all. I didn't find enlightenment. I didn't all of sudden become some great being. The only thing I got was power. But power without the knowledge to use it is useless. That is why, i decided to travel the world more. To learn and experience more. To find out what kind of god I wanted to be." Poseidon explained.
" I spoke to each of my siblings, but even after hearing their views, I still felt blind. So, I tried a different perspective. I lived amongst humans once again, foregoing my right as a god of Olympus and instead settling down in this world. And by doing so, I have learned so much more about myself and others than I ever would by sitting on a throne in Olympus. I have met some of the greatest humans in history. I served under King Leonidas; I fought alongside Julius Caesar. I've battled against Alexander the Great; I've faced the flying general Lu Bu; I fight alongside King Arthur, Merlyn, the other knights of the round table, I've met Jesus Christ. I would even say that I fought a bloody and grueling battle against Qin Shi Huang, the only man to ever be able to fight me to a draw. All of them were born so far apart and yet they all shared so many amazing qualities. They were each brave, strong, and wise men. Some wiser than others. Some stronger than others. But all of those great men. Were just that. Men. Humans."
Excalibur, each and every single one of them, listened closely as the man they would one day come to know, spoke such words of power about the humans they ridicule. The humans they see below them
" Some in Olympus have even questioned me on pledging myself to Arthur's cause. And all I can tell them is, that it is a cause I respect. To fight for justice. To protect the people of this planet. To destroy evil. That is a cause worth fighting for. So, they can mock me. The entire world can mock me. The god who pledges himself to humans. The lowly god who sleeps with humans. Ha! I accept all of it. Because if I could go back, there's not a damn thing I would change. I mean I've even had the privilege and the joy to make love to the pure embodiment of fire, life and death. That's not something many men can say they've done. Is it?" Poseidon spoke.
" So, go ahead Apocalypse. Talk about me all you want. Nothing is going to change the way I view these wonderful creatures. But remember something. Whatever time, whatever future, whatever life you live in, humans will always be strong. They will continue to grow." Poseidon spoke.
" How can you be so loyal to these cockroaches. Why are you willing to die for them?" Apocalypse asked.
" Because in many ways they are better than us." Poseidon replied.
" They are broken, flawed, animals." Apocalypse spoke.
" Damn right they're flawed. But a lot of them try... To do better. To forgive. I've seen many of the evil's humanity has to offer. But yet, every time I begin to doubt them even a little. I see it once again. The greatness they have within them. And if I can protect that greatness, if I can guide them to a better future. Not just for themselves. But for all living beings. Then I will. And there's not a damn thing I wouldn't do, to keep them safe. Even if the entire universe were to turn against them. Even if my own flesh and blood turned on them, I would fight in their name." Poseidon explained.
" You would go against your own people. You would kill mutants like you, like me, like us... For them?" Apocalypse asked.
" I would protect them, and mutants. I would find a way." Poseidon explained.
" You can't." Apocalypse spoke
" I've been told that many times before. And yet every time, I rise to the occasion. I meet the storm head on, and I endure. I know there will come a day where I just might fail. But if I do, I know in my heart that someone stronger than me will rise up and take my place. But until that day, I will keep dreaming of a better tomorrow... For all of us." Poseidon told the man. He then got up from the fire and walked away, leaving apocalypse to ponder his words.
" He got one over on you, Apocalypse." Jubilee joked.
" Quiet, Jubilee." Apocalypse replied.
Jubilee looked at the man and stuck her tongue out at him.
" That was something. Ole Remy, don't know what to say right now." Gambit spoke.
" I think we should turn in for the night. It might do us all some good." Betsy spoke.
She got up from her seat and watched as Poseidon checked on each and every single one of his soldiers. A slight rose tint reaching her face.
