The two Alpha's met in their wolf forms. Snarling, baring their fangs and snapping at the other. The Blood Moon Alpha leaped over a sconce and charged at Atlas. Atlas burst forward and met the Alpha head-on. Atlas snapped at the Alpha's neck and fur, missing as the Alpha pushed away Atlas's face with his muzzle.
With a massive paw, the Alpha raked his claws along Atlas' body, drawing blood. Atlas shoved the wolf back and freed himself from the attack.
The two circled and bared their teeth. Foam dripped from the Alpha's mouth, and its scarlet eyes were wild.
"You really don't know who I am, do you?" The wolf snarled.
"Should I?" Atlas narrowed his eyes and charged at the wolf.
Atlas snapped at the Alpha's ear and tore a piece off. The Alpha roared and bit down on Atlas' neck. Blood seeped from the puncture wounds in Atlas' neck. Atlas yelped but didn't back down. He flipped his head back and freed himself from the teeth, clamping down on his neck.
"Your father was a better fighter than you." The wolf dipped his head and narrowed its crazy eyes.
"I'm sorry to disappoint you. But I am not my father."
"I can see that very clearly." The Alpha jumped and landed on Atlas, crushing him with the weight of his body. Atlas barked and nipped at the Alpha's feet but to no avail.
The crowd was in a frenzy. Wolves were fighting and foaming at the mouth while unchanged werewolves fled to their homes. Eli and Venus were bleeding as they fought off other giant wolves from engaging with their Alpha. The firelight lit the arena in an eerie glow of red.
Serena lay in the dirt while the two Alphas fought a few feet away. Her ears rang. The thuds and howls of the wolves dulled in her ears, but the constant, high-pitched ring sang over all. Serena stretched a hand out and fisted the dirt. The coarse ground scraped against her hand and drew specks of blood. She grimaced and pushed herself up.
A sharp pain shot through her leg. She took a small, hobbled step forward, toward Atlas, but cried out as she set her foot. She looked down, and her eyes widened. The muscles in her calf were twitching uncontrollably and red, red as the blood in her body. The calf was swelling to twice the size it should be and stiffened at her movements. She clenched her jaw and set her gaze at Atlas' losing figure.
Serena hobbled toward Atlas, favoring her swelling and reddening leg. But each step was laborious. She slid her foot along the ground for a few feet until her toes caught on a rock, and she tumbled to the ground. Her body slammed into the rocks, and the air in her lungs escaped with a short wheeze.
Serena coughed and heaved as the air refused to enter and fill her blood with their oxygen. A low growl came from behind her. But with each cough, the growling grew louder until it was on top of her.
A slow drip of saliva plopped onto Serena's exposed shoulder and trickled down her arm.
Slowly, she rolled over and looked up. The barring fangs of the Alpha were inches from her face. The hot breath puffed in her face sending rank odors up her nose. Serena gagged and turned away. At her movement, the wolf snarled and snapped at her hair and neck. Serena screamed and looked wildly about.
Atlas lay motionless a few yards away. His eyes closed, and his muzzle was drenched in blood. A red patch oozed from his neck into the puddle beneath his face. His body moved up and down in short spurts at his breathing.
"No..." Serena whispered as she pulled herself toward Atlas. Her eyes caught movement off to the right. She turned toward Venus fighting against a wolf of similar stature. The wolf launched itself onto Venus and crushed her beneath its weight. It sank its teeth into Venus' neck. Blood coated the fangs. Venus whimpered, and her eyes flicked frantically about, resting on Serena's shocked face.
A heavy weight of a paw pressed into her back. The claws pushed through her shirt and into her pack.
Serena screamed. She screamed and screamed as she was dragged backward. Away from Atlas and Venus. Away from Eli and the Elders. Away from her new family.
As Serena was dragged away, the Alpha called to its pack.
"Burn it! Burn it all. Kill all the stragglers and head back to the pack." The Alpha bellowed before turning to Serena. "And you, you will be the best prize of them all." The Alpha cracked and shifted into the man from before, save for the clothing. "Why don't we take this elsewhere." He smirked through his long hair dangling over his face.
His face was wild and blood splattered. It was caked on there like mud on a child after a rainy day. His eyes were bright and malicious. He smiled a wide smile, one that would lull anyone into a sense of security if it weren't accompanied by blood and gore. Atlas' blood and gore.
Serena gritted her teeth and kicked the Alpha hard in the stomach. He bent over, surprised, but slowly raised his eyes to meet hers.
"Sweetheart, no need to get so rough on me right here. We have plenty of time for that later." He smiled and Serena froze.
The Alpha snatched her arm and flung her over his shoulder. She grunted at the force of her hips hitting his muscled arms. He raised an arm and smacked her butt hard. She gasped at the contact, and the man smirked. The stinging spread into the base of her spine. She kicked and squirmed, but he only tightened his grip on her waist.
"Luna, don't make me kill you like I did your mate over there." He threw a thumb behind him as he walked away from the burning grounds.
"What?" Serena muttered. "You-You killed him?" She turned her head as far as it would go but could only see his long hair flow down his shoulders and back.
"Yes, I did. His father took something dear from me, so I took something dear from his son." He walked a few feet more and added, "And the world is better off for it."
The Alpha carried the screaming and fighting woman toward the trees as the fire lit the surrounding forest. The orange glow of the fire cast a dark shadow behind the receding figures. Wolves howled into the dark, cloudy night as the fire crackled and burned in their wake.
