章節 9: The Scar on His Heart and Wallet

A long time ago, the Park family had only one car in the family, which was used by Michael, Klaus' father, to go to work at the port. For that reason, Klaus always had to take a long bus and a train ride from Long Island to downtown New York when he went to visit Rhyzer at the Hospital.

Going to Manhattan on Saturdays had already become routine for Klaus Park, so he was already quite used to the area. So usually, after Klaus had changed the wilted flowers in the vase beside Rhyzer's bed, he talked with his unconscious brother, trying to stimulate him, leave the Hospital, and walk a few blocks to visit a cozy bookstore. However, on this particular Saturday, he was more thoughtful than usual.

Klaus Park stared at his older brother's pale face with sadness and a whirlwind of thoughts in his head.

Rhyzer's beard was a little big and his hair too, so Klaus asked a nurse for a razor and scissors. Very carefully, Klaus shaved off Rhyzer's beard completely with the razor, some shaving cream, and water. Using the scissors, he cut a few locks of his older brother's hair, but not much because Rhyzer used to keep his hair shoulder-length.

After finishing his brother's hygiene, Klaus grabbed a chair and sat in front of the hospital bed, wondering what Rhyzer would say about him quitting the Esports career when he woke up.

As Klaus thought about it, the hisses emitted by the heart monitoring machine grew louder and echoed deeply in his mind. This always happened when Klaus spent a lot of time in Rhyzer's room as if every hiss was trying to remind him of all the times he'd refused to go out with his brother just to keep playing Myth2 tirelessly.

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*

The kind of guilt Klaus Park felt was different from the usual, a mixture of guilt and grief. More than anyone else, Klaus still believed that Rhyzer would wake up at some point, except that each week with the devices on, nearly five thousand dollars was added to the Park's debt, making Klaus constantly question what the future would be for him and his family.

As Klaus was about to leave, a man in his sixties in a white coat walked into the room.

"Good morning, Klaus. It's been a while since we've seen each other, hasn't it?" asked Dr. Rodriguez with a tight smile.

Klaus Park rose from his chair and shook hands with the doctor. "We saw each other last year, I believe."

"Yes, you're right. So, it's been a long time. Are you busy now?" The doctor put his hands behind his back and cocked his head slightly to the side.

"Actually, I was just leaving." Klaus pointed to the door.

"Please sit down. I promise our conversation won't take long." Rodriguez pointed to the chair next to the bed.

Patiently, Klaus Park returned to his chair, and the doctor leaned against Rhyzer's bed.

"Klaus, I need to be honest with you. I watched you grow up, so no problem, huh?" Rodriguez asked, and the answer was just a nod from the young man. "The chances of Rhyzer waking up haven't increased in recent years. As requested, we do a battery of tests on your brother every month, but the organs remain exactly as before."

"Yes I know. The nurses updated me on this."

"No, I suppose you don't know everything. Take this." Doctor Rodriguez held out an envelope to Klaus.

Before opening the envelope, Klaus Park hesitated, as if he could already feel what this was about. Even so, he opened it and withdrew the letter from the envelope stating the Park's debt: $2,100,560.97

The amount didn't scare Klaus because he already knew it, but if Chun or Michael Park were reminded of this enormous debt one more day, it would shake them up like before.

"This is an enormous value, Klaus. And if this amount continues to increase, no matter how much consideration the owner of this Hospital has for your father, his children will use legal means to force you to mortgage everything you have. You will have to live on the street." The doctor warned in a soft voice.

Klaus Park did not find an adequate answer for Dr. Rodriguez and remained quiet.

"Alright Klaus, I'm leaving. Think about it boy, you have a good family, don't give up everything you already have."

Finally, the doctor left the room, and Klaus left too. Remembering the astronomical size of the debt was a constant torment for Klaus, and while the Parks had tried countless times to find other Hospitals to transfer Rhyzer, none were so much cheaper, and none would accept so many late fees.

Sitting while waiting for the train, Klaus decided to search the Webnet for the most effective ways to make money fast. Of course, there were numerous false forms that were already saturated, such as Digital Marketing, Trading, and Drop-shipping. Still, a forum post about games caught Klaus' attention.

The post was from a user named MonkeyD and talked about how he surprised his girlfriend with a brand-new car for her sixteenth birthday, which made Klaus smoke with envy. However, the post didn't stop there.

MonkeyD told in the rest of the paragraphs about how playing Rise Online had changed his financial life because it was true that the coins earned in the game could be converted into Dollars.

'Wait, is this real? How's that?' Klaus wondered.

He knew that a few years ago, there were games that gave out virtual currencies, but the savings of all these games were very fragile and required heavy initial investment.

Even after Klaus' train arrived and he boarded, Klaus kept reading countless accounts from people who said they loved Rise Online and others who hated it.

The undeniable truth was that the number of players only increased every day, but the value of the game's currency hadn't changed even nearly five months after launch. The economic logic behind it was too tricky for Klaus Park to understand, but it was convincing enough to get his attention. So as soon as he got home, he logged in Rise Online again.

章節 10: Class Skill

Of all the possible ways to make money in Rise Online, Farming was the one that most pleased Klaus Park at first glance.

Farming is when a player spends a long time hunting one or more monsters. It occurs both intending to gain EXP and obtain a specific item that the hunted monster can drop.

Let's say that one monster can drop an enchanted wand when it dies, but the drop rate is extremely low, so the player needs to kill this same type of creature several times to have a chance of one of them dropping the enchanted wand.

So this tactic was perfect for Klaus Park; after all, he needed EXP to level up, and as soon as he got a drop, he would put it up for sale on the World Market, so players who need this item for a quest or something else, and who have money, can buy from him. That way, he could earn some money while also having fun.

However, the fact that Klaus was two levels lower than an average beginner was certainly a problem. It was never expected for a game to limit the player to leave the Starting City in any MMORPG, so Klaus was sure there was a reason for that rule.

Maybe the developers wanted new players to learn a few things before they started exploring, or perhaps the monsters were too strong for a newbie to handle.

Anyway, Klaus decided he wouldn't start thinking about it yet. He had a high PR, so maybe he could handle weaker monsters even at his current level, but that would depend on his present Attributes.

Klaus Park opened the system with a swipe of his finger and looked for the Attributes tab. When he found it, he clicked to see how much rising from level 1 to 3 made him stronger.

Soon he saw that he was up only two points in Attack and one in Agility. This was underwhelming; however, he was just glad he didn't lose the stats got before he died.

"This game seems to be quite punishing, so why didn't they take away the points I gained?" Klaus looked a little thoughtful.

Then Klaus noticed that at the bottom of the Attributes screen, there was another tab called Class Abilities.

Before clicking on that, Klaus looked both ways down the alley he was and realized that there was no one around except for the people passing on the side street. It would suck if someone was spying on his system screen and saw the two negative levels; he would become a joke in town.

Klaus clicked on the tab, and the system screen expanded before his eyes. At the same time, the voice of the system echoed in his mind, warning him:

[You have earned a Class Point for reaching Level 3.

In Rise Online, wonderful worlds and millions of unexplored places await you. The borders have opened for you.

Good luck on your journey, traveler!]

Before Klaus Park could react to the message, a Skill Tree appeared in front of him. The tree was still small, had only three initial branches, and three Skills to unlock, while the rest was all hidden by a gray mist.

At the starting point of the Skill Tree flowchart, there was already something unlocked, an Inherent Skill of his Class, and at the top of the screen was a message explaining what it was all about.

[This is your Class Skill Tree. On this screen, you can unlock Class Abilities with Class Points.]

"So it works that way here too. Well, at least that's intuitive." Klaus shrugged.

The Skill Tree branches were small initially, but they usually expanded quite a bit in any genre game. At the moment, there are only three Skills to unlock.

"I have a Class Point, right? I think I will use it before I go hunting." Klaus decided and clicked on the first Skill to read its description.

[Class Ability: Scanning Eye.

Seeing beyond what the eyes can see is crucial for those who want to become stronger.

You will be able to read the Status screens of everyone who is up to 30 levels above you. This Skill will evolve with you.

(You are unable to distribute Class Points to this Skill, this Skill cannot be evolved manually).

Do you want to unlock the <Scanning Eye> for 1 Rank Point? YES/NO.]

[Class Ability: Apographer of Skills.

Fate cannot limit your scope of abilities if your talent is to copy.

This Skill will allow you to copy Skills from other players, but there will be an original requirement for each one.

(You are unable to distribute Class Points to this Skill, this Skill cannot be evolved).

Want to unlock the <Apographer of Skills> for 10 Class Points? YES/NO.]

[Class Ability: Sidereal Casting.

Smelting and transforming are a Blacksmith's Primary Skills, but Psyker's do more than smelt iron or gold, Psyker's merge bonds and fates.

You will be able to fuse Items and Skills according to your level.

Want to unlock <Sidereal Foundry> for 5 Rank Points YES/NO.]

Klaus could see so many possibilities for these three Abilities that he felt almost at a dead end. He only had one Class Point available, so now he could only unlock the <Scanning Eye>. However, once he unlocked this Skill, he would be even further away from the others.

Klaus would only be left with Class Inherent Ability if he chose not to unlock the <Scanning Eye> for now.

[Class Inherent Ability: Telekinesis.

Typically, Telekinesis can only be unlocked by bargaining with the Abyss entities, but the origin of the Psyker's Telekinesis is even older than the Abyss itself.

With this Ability, you can move objects with your psychic energy.

(You are unable to distribute Class Points to this Skill, this Skill will spontaneously grow depending on your character's actions or if you face monsters stronger than your current level with a certain frequency.)]

"Move objects with your mind? That's what the description meant, isn't it? That doesn't seem so bad, especially with this evolution condition. If I can't spend Class Points on each of these skills, that means I can focus on getting the other Skills."

The main thing that bothered Klaus Park at the moment was the Class Points, and he didn't know how he got them.

If this kind of point was received when leveling up, Klaus should have gained two Class Points for leveling up two levels, and that's not what happened.

With that in mind, Klaus decided to log out and search the Webnet more about the subject, so he wouldn't mess up in the Early Game.
