One Week Later

“Are you listening, Vix?”

“Hm?” Vix glanced up from the pale white book lying in her lap. “Did you say something?”

Caine, sitting at the edge of one of the sagging couches within Mirra’s hideout, shook his head and slumped back. “Never mind.”

A prickle of annoyance went through Vix. She raised her book higher, blocking Caine from view, and continued to read.

‘All that exists in our physical world, every object we touch, smell, see, and perceive, is subject to change. Only the Truth remains unaltered. Thus, the Truth may be used to shape reality freely, the better to suit the design of its wielder. What the ignorant call magic or spells is merely an imposition of will; a forcible change on the malleable laws of nature.’

Vix realized she had read the same paragraph three times, without taking in any of it. She huffed, her skin prickling with irritation. Vix gave ‘Volume 4’ a little shake, ruffling the pages to vent some of her feelings.
