Grace was dictating to him how to pull certain vegetation out of the ground carefully. How to pick them and removes seeds or leaves that weren't safe for consumption.
It was a weird role reversal since she didn't hold back her orders at all to her master, but she had already gotten the okay from him about telling him what to do. She took those orders seriously, making Alex look like the slave instead of her.

"Grace doesn't know Master, but the Earthen Shroom is usually found in mountainous regions but it may have been confused for this forest due to its abundance of nature."
Grace wasn't entirely sure herself since it was technically possible for an Earthen Shroom to pop up in this area, only it was too rare for them to find in 3 days' time. Now with only one day left, it was pretty much impossible to finish the quest.
"Do you remember any areas in this forest that might have the Shroom growing?" Alex asked once more as he pulled out a map of the area.
He didn't just rely on Grace's memory, he made sure to bring other supplies needed. One of the first things he did after getting to Carson and finishing signing up with the different Guilds, was to buy necessary supplies.
He got several maps of the surrounding areas, one of the charted parts of the Edenbar Plains, one of the Elsen Woods, and even one that had some areas of the Ether Forest charted. It cost a lot, but it was worth it to him.
Grace thought for a moment before pointing to 3 areas in the forest that might house it, but it was still a long shot. These areas were more rocky or hilly than other areas but Alex probably wouldn't find anything anyway.
He sighed in frustration and put the list down. He wrapped his arms around the already naked Grace who was smiling as she stuck her head in her happy place.

Because they couldn't even use the whole day, since it took a few hours to travel back to town, Alex was forced to give up his search once the early evening hit. He was frustrated.
How was he supposed to get something that was on similar lines to winning the lottery? He destroyed several trees in frustration before dashing back to camp faster than before. He wanted to get back to the Guild as fast as possible so he could give that old hag a piece of his mind for giving him an impossible task.
Even if it was partially his fault for accepting it, how was he supposed to know that there was an herb that very rarely grew here? It wasn't like the old hag warned him or he found pages in books about it being rare.
He was new to this region and didn't know a lot of the "common knowledge" of this area.
With another frustrated sigh, he reached the camp, but pulled his weapons out and narrowed his eyes as he felt another aura, other than his Ego and Grace in the area.
