Charles froze. The way his eyes darkened, Alex knew he was not going to trust it easily but it did not matter. As long as a seed of doubt was sown, Charles would connect the dots.

"You have neve been a kind father, husband or lover but you have been an intellectual ruler father. Does your intellect really tell you to kill me and earn the ire of the empire?" Alex titled his head and asked him with a sigh when Charles gritted his teeth.

"Nobles did not like you. They would not mind." the words came out forcefully. For he knew how much change Alex had brought.

Charles had always been afraid about closing all the illegal activities run by nobles like gambling house, black market. Charles had always thought they were needed for better taxes, better earning and running the empire. But Alex got rid of all of them.

The nobles were gritting teeth but Charles noticed it did not affect the taxation level much. The nobles invested it in other ways Alex suggested.
