The next night arrives, and Joshua returns to his wife a little before midnight to await the arrival of the assassin's envoy.
A storm was brewing outside as lightning streaked across the sky, low thunder rumbled in the distance as the white flashes of light filled the rooms from the ornate windows.
"Cassandra?" Joshua called out. He teleported into the study and expected his wife to be waiting for him, but she was not there. The room was also void of light, only the flashes of lightning outside illuminated the room.
Normally the room would be illuminated by torches along the walls and the massive fireplace that was the centerpiece of the room. The room was quiet, the whole estate was. Only the rumblings of the distant thunder and the loud crackling of the close lightning strikes could be heard over the rain hammering down upon the roof.
