Alive. Daniela was alive! Sam barely managed not to burst into tears. "Thank you!" 

He gingerly picked up the sleeping Lucy before going to the ICU and his heart broke all over again seeing his wife lying there hooked up to a ventilator and all sorts of wires and monitors. Her baby bump was gone. The son they never got to meet was dead and there would never be any more. 

The tears Sam had been suppressing ran down his cheeks. Horrible as it was, she was still here. They already had Lucy. As long as he had his wife and daughter, that would have to be enough. 

But who had done this to her? Why? How had something this horrible even happened?!

He sat in a chair next to her bed and carefully rearranged Lucy without waking her up before reaching out to take Daniela's hand and hold it against his lips as he continued to cry. He didn't move from that spot until Lucy woke up and was hungry.
