Out on the prowl, hidden in the shadow, Felixia watched its target.
It moved strangely, swishing left and right, almost as if it was trying to draw attention to itself.
The smell of meat wafted off this strange swaying thing, and it was a meal that Felixia would soon be enjoying.
As it watched its prey, its movements started to slow, drifting back and forth in smaller arcs that before.
Time ticked on, and before Felixia knew it…it had stopped. Maybe it was going to sleep or maybe it was waiting for its own prey. It mattered not, as Felixia knew now was the time. Now was the time to make its move and take it down.
So, sitting back on its hind legs, Felixia ready itself.
Then…with a mighty leap, Felixia attacked.
…
Olivia wasn't sure why she did it. But she had to say it was quite a funny sight.
When it came to figuring out how to teach Felixia how to hunt, they wanted to be safe in what they did. First hunt and all, the mother or father of an animal generally was there to teach. And it was probably done in a life-or-death situation, which probably ended with one or several of the young being killed.
But Olivia was more evolved than your average animal. She didn't say that out loud lest Lyrika mumble the word 'barely' or something for fun. But being more evolved and having knowledge from Earth, she figured, 'why not ease Felixia into hunting, rather than throw it into the deep end.'
A time to sink or swim would come, but who says you can't have some practice first.
And that is exactly how this situation started.
"Let go. Just… you got the meat, now stop."
Ameril had her hand over her mouth to stop herself from both giggling at the sight and swooning at how precious it was. Philly was the same, but she kept her façade a little better than Ameril, sticking her head in her book when she was about to laugh.
Lyrika on the other hand was in the difficult situation of being…well, the bait.
Or at least her tail was.
Her tail with a nice juicy piece of meat on the end.
…
They had watched Felixia wander around, and while Olivia had watched it go, Lyrika's tail caught her eye. That is when she came up with the brilliant idea of using her tail and the piece of meat Felixia had left, lest it go to waste, as a way to…introduce Felixia to hunting.
She knew that Felixia's instincts would probably do most of the work for it when push came to shove, but she was sure this would help Felixia in some way in understanding when to go for its target, and to make sure it knew how to actually attack it. And if it hadn't, they at least all got to see the beautiful sight of Felixia pouncing out of the bush with all its might in order to latch on and tear away at the lump of meat at the end of Lyrika's tail.
Well, everyone but Lyrika got to enjoy it, that is.
"Olivia. This was your stupid idea. Can you stop…"
Knowing she should probably do something before she gets an earful when Felixia decides to move away from the meat and start to go for the rest of her tail, she quickly walked over and eased Felixia off. It had a satisfied look on its face at a job well done, and the blood around its mouth showed that it had enjoyed its meal. But one lump of meat would not be enough to satisfy its craving, and so it pulled away from Olivia and headed off to look for more prey to hunt.
…
Felixia started to wander away, its nose paving the way, and so the group decided they should follow. Lyrika decided to remain at the camp, not that she wasn't interested, but as they spoke about it, they realised someone should hold the fort down in place of them all leaving. It would be terrible if they returned and found they stuff had been stolen or some beast had ripped it all to shreds.
To make sure she could alert them in case something happened, Philly handed over a small vial of the explosive powder she had used when making the potions during the carriage ambush. Should she be attacked, all she had to do was slam it to the ground a short distance from herself, and the group would definitely hear it. If anything it worked out as a good first strike weapon as well.
With the emergency alert signal in place, Olivia, Philly and Ameril headed off after Felixia, who had been obsessively sniffing at the ground and the air trying to locate what had caught its attention. Thankfully, Felixia was cautious and didn't just run after what ever it was. Who knew what it could be that it had found.
Should it end up being something like a Gootra, Olivia would likely have to intervene. Things had not gone amazingly well the last time she encountered one, but with what she had learnt as well as the girls assisting, she figured she could take it. Felixia on the other hand…well, given the size difference between it and the deer-like creature, she didn't like the odds.
Even something like the wolves that she met on her first day in this world, a pack of them would cause some serious trouble for Felixia. One, it might be able to handle, but Olivia was sure that even then, Felixia would not come out unscathed.
What Felixia needed was something that would fight back, not deal too much damage, was small and easy to take down.
Only one creature came to Olivia's mind that met these criteria and that was…
An Effler.
Which was good, because given how fast they reproduced and how common they were, that is exactly what they found as they followed Felixia over a hill.
The only problem was that there were a dozen or so of them.
As soon as Felixia saw the group, it crouched low, and slowly started to move towards them, sticking towards the bushes nearby.
"That's quite a lot for Felixia to deal with," Ameril said aloud.
"Yes, but I don't know what we can do. We can't get too close otherwise they are going to spot us and ruin Felixia's chance to hunt." Olivia rubbed her chin as she tried to figure out what they could do. While they were not tough, they were vicious, and should a good number of them get a hold of Felixia, the damage could be heavy.
"I know, we can wait until Felixia makes its move, then when it has the attention of all of them, we rush in to try and thin down their numbers, leaving a few for Felixia to deal with."
That was the only plan she could come up with. Even Philly couldn't think of anything better. Anything they did would just cause problems for Felixia ruining it's hunting experience, and there was no way they could change its mind given how much closer it was to the group of Efflers.
No this was happening, and they needed to let it. This would be good for Felixia.
…
As they waited with bated breath, they all stood a short distance away behind trees waiting for Felixia. But, it would seem that Felixia was quite smart when it came to choosing its target. So far it had waited in the bushes, quite close to the group, but it had not pounced yet. It would seem that it realised the danger that would befall it should it attack randomly, ending up with it being swarmed by the Efflers. So, it was waiting for a good opportunity.
Before long, it finally saw one. An Effler was on its lonesome a short distance from it, and it would take a good several seconds for the others to come running over, should they spot what happened. Felixia hoped that within that time, it could get away before the others ran to help the lone Effler. It was the only opportunity it found, and so decided to go for it.
The Effler, which had its back towards Felixia, had no idea what happened, as all of a sudden a massive weight slammed into its back. Along with it, claws dug into its fur, tearing up its skin and ripping through its flesh. The Effler squeaked, giving off a horrible high-pitched noise at the pain. But before it could do anything else, it fell to the ground as Felixia's tail whipped out from behind it and slammed the 'growing' spike on the end into its head. It hadn't yet grown enough to pierce anything, but with the force and speed Felixia used, it was enough to kill the Effler.
It had successfully completed its hunt. But before Felixia could bask in its glory and enjoy its prey, the other Efflers started to head towards it.
Felixia turned and started to head back into the bush, but before it would, two Efflers jumped right in front of it, as if they had been hiding in a nearby bush as well.
This meant Felixia would have to fight its way out. It may even have to fight all of the Efflers coming its way.
But thankfully that wouldn't be necessary as Felixia saw its pack joining the fray and attacking the other Efflers. That meant only the ones in front had to be taken down.
Given how simple one was to take down one, Felixia didn't see it being that much harder to take down two.
Hi All, I hope you like the next chapter. Felixia has been gaining some experience in hunting, but now, it will have to face off against enemies head to head. We shall have to see how Felixia will deal with the Efflers in the next chapter.
Please let me know your thoughts on the chapter.
