Cayden POV
I feel the ground underfoot and the wind in my fur; I never thought I’d be one with my wolf again. And letting him take the reins as he takes down another of Kline’s loyalists has me in awe of his strength.
Our strength.
We had it all along.
Being connected to the pack again is also something I won’t take for granted again. Those loyal to Maverick communicated and fought together as one unit. Yet, those fighting against us tainted the pack bond. The tangible sadness over their desertion hung like a cloud, and as Beta, it settled over me, except I bet Maverick felt it the worst.
These were his people. He was their Alpha. I’ll never know such pain, but I will be there to lessen it for him.
Before I can think more on the subject, Maverick and I are surrounded by three rogue wolves.
‘Stay close to me,’ Maverick says through the mindlink. ‘I’ll protect you.’
‘No, we’ll protect each other. I have your back, like always.’
