Kieran left the house in tears. He knew today was the day. The day he had to leave his son forever. He silently walked over to the broken-down house.
The door was left unlocked. He walked in and sat on the cleaned spot on the ground.
He could still feel his beloved's presence in this house. In every brick and every dust-covered thing...she was there.
This was the house they first made love, the place where he proposed... now it's in ruin.
Yes, his wife was a witch, the witch of the arctic pack.
Twenty years ago when he was assigned to overlook this pack, he met her, Eloise. a beautiful brunette. She was like a ray of sunshine.
Her smile could really light up the room.
Kieran took out the crumbled photo from his pocket. His beloved's face was slightly smeared from years of folding.
"Eloise... oh honey... today I am finally going to join you. I'm happy and anguished at the same time. Our son.... who will our son survive....especially in those times?" He sat there sobbing loudly. "Our poor son needs us..."
He hurriedly wiped his eyes clean. "yes... we can watch over him from heaven. Isn't that a great deal? we get to be together and... we get to watch him." hot tears rolled down without control.
The door suddenly opened and Rue stood there with a small take-out bag.
"I figured you would be here," she came in and sat next to him.
"What are you doing here, I thought you were preparing your speech to make the big reveal to Nico."
"I was… but before that I need to know something."
"What?"
"Is Nico a witch? Has he summoned the grimoire yet?"
"no.. He is human, just as she predicted him to be,"
His Eloise had a vision when she was pregnant with Nico. She saw the future. That day she fell sick with nervousness and anguish. "We have to save him.." she had begged him. With tears in her eyes, she explained the vision.
Firstly, their son will be born fated to be mated with the Alpha king.
Secondly, she requested him to bring their son back to this house in his eighteenth year of life and even made an arrangement so that Nicolai could get close to Rue. She even predicted and arranged his class schedule for him.
Thirdly… "They will meet in a thousand years and give their hearts to each other but before that… he should never meet the Alpha king. Never. Even if the opportunity arises, he must not. If not, catastrophes were bound to happen." She had said, silently sobbing.
Last and not least… she requested for him to always protect their child and never to leave his side.
That was the first time he had seen his wife sob and wail like that.
Kieran remember the sadness he felt at that moment. His wife never included her in any of her visions. She only mentioned himself and their son. He knew that something bad was going to happen to her right then…
Rue placed the takeout bag on his lap. "Soup,"
The heat on his lap distracted him from his thoughts. "Thanks….,"
Rue stared to tear up. "Uncle, you can leave this town and stay hidden. If you stay back in your home the werewolves will kill you.….."
Without a word, he wiped her tears away.
This was Nico's destiny his dear wife had already foreseen it. if he tried to alter it in any way, his son's life would be thrown in a different direction.
His life would be at even more risk.
He opened the hot soup and gulped it down. "I thought my final meal would be scotch or whiskey. I guess take out soup also counts,"
"Your wife loved this soup...." she sobbed.
"That's right... she loved this take out place. We had our first date there." he nostalgically looked at the take-out bag. "Are you sure it's happening tonight?"
"Yes, it's happening tonight.... I saw Nico's neck. His mark started to appear. My mum is going to give birth...."
"How many know of this? is she well protected?"
"Only my dad and me as of now. She is safe in our underground basement area. The rest of the pack is still unaware. But after he is born, we can't stop what's going to happen,"
"You don't have to stop anything, what is meant to happen should happen..."
Because the predestined fate should not be altered in any way possible.
Things should play out just as his wife had foreseen.
"We can try to change it uncle. We can if we try..." Rue looked up at him hopefully.
Kieran shook his head.
At first when his beloved wife found out about his dear wife's fate. he desperately tried to change things. They left this small town ran to the coven. Anywhere that could provide them sanctuary.
But it had its effect.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
He lost his wife soon after.
That day he deiced that he was giving into fate. he would do anything to save his five year old son's life. Even if he had to sacrifice his.
Secretly, he made alterations in their old house. Be built a basement tunnel in the permafrost that connects directly to the frozen river. Borrowed a coffin specifically made for vampire slumbers.
Everything was ready for the day.
Kieran sighed loudly.
"My desperate attempts only lead to Eloise's death. If we change anything now, Nico's life will be in danger. I will never risk my dear son's life. Besides, if the Alpha king loses his mate, then the whole world will be in danger from his wrath...You know I can't risk that..."
Saying this, he left the small house.
********
Peering at the now closed door, Rue let out a sob. "we can change things uncle.. we can try...." she sobbed desperately.
This broken down fireplace was the place she made her promise. it was also the day the destiny started to play her part in their lives.
She was just three years old when she first met the pack witch Eloise. A young woman who was full term pregnant with Nico. her calm voice her beautiful back hair was what pulled her towards her.
The woman gave off a calming vibe. Rue, who had a very turbulent time with her new arisen wolf, always sought solace with Eloise.
Every time she visited, she would buy her onion soup to warm her body.
Destiny, fate... you can call it so many names, it has so many shapes. But what people don't know is that.. destiny can be changed.
Their destiny changed the moment she made that promise.
Thinking back, she remembered that cold winter day seventeen years ago.
Rue ran over to this Eloise's place like usual. Unlike any day, the witch was waiting for her by the door.
"What is it miss Eloise? Aren't you cold?"
"Rue come in. I have a very important thing to discuss."
Rue could not remember what expression the witch had on her face, but she remembered feeling so happy to see her.
Eloise made her sit on the comfortable warm couch and squatted down in front of her. "Rue, I have a favor to ask of you."
"What is it miss..."
"I want you to protect someone. This child.." she placed her small hand on her bulging stomach. "Can you promise to do so?"
As a young child she had heard whispers that witch's always repay their debt. So she playfully asked her. "What will you give me in return?"
"What do you want dear Rue?"
"I want a brother. Everyone has as sibling but I don't. Mum said that if we have a brother she can live with father again.. the moon goddess as not gifted her. Miss witch can you make it possible for her to have a child,"
Rue could still remember that witch's expression shift. Her eyes were gleaming slightly green.
"y-yes... I will grant you this favor...you will have a brother soon."
She knew that wish would be granted soon, young her was ecstatic. "I'm happy. I promise with all my heart to protect this child."
"Rue, there is something else. Your little brother... he is the Alpha king."
"Oh what is an Alpha king? is he an Alpha like me, grandpa?"
"No much stronger. Your baby brother will be the strongest in the world,"
"Yeah~ that's awesome..."
The witch smiled softly. "And this child in me.. he is going to be your brother's mate. Your brother-in-law,"
Rue remembered being shocked and happy at the same time.
"You can't tell anyone Rue. and you must make sure your brother and my son will not meet as long as you are alive…You must not. Or else your brother and your brother-in-law will suffer a lot," Eloise had desperately cried.
After that, her memory was blurry. She could only remember that one day the witch and her mate let the town, leaving this house abandoned.
Sighing, Rue stood up.
Thinking about past really gave her a pounding head ache.
She cleaned up the take out boxes and left the house. today she had to be brave and cold hearted.
It was not going to be pretty.
Wars are never pretty.
Just out the door Rue paused. "I… I can try.. I can try to change destiny. Just like I did when I was young. I will change it. That way my brother and Rue can meet,"
