Emily Davis was rather upset having not seen Henry Russell. Upon spotting Charlotte Cooper lying in bed and remembering her previous encounter, she felt indignant. "What a little kitten and puppy," she sneered, "assuming they can do whatever they please just because she's his sister!" Spouting these bitter words, Emily picked up the bag she had just dropped on the floor, flung open the door, and stormed out angrily. She was fuming, feeling a twinge of injustice. But she quickly cheered herself up, dreaming of a future where, perhaps, Henry might notice her over his seemingly perfect and pretty sister.
Charlotte found the whole situation absurd, recalling Emily's previous behaviour, she couldn't resist a scornful chuckle. Annoying herself over such a person wasn't worth it. Who's the real kitten or puppy here? She thought, lying back down. Although her mind was quite awake and she didn't need more rest, she still closed her eyes to rejuvenate.
