The headbutt had been satisfying.
The punch, even more so.
But watching Victor shake his head as he pushed himself up, was the icing on the cake.
'I'm going to enjoy this.' Esau thought to himself with a smile, Victor glaring at him as he got his feet, claws flexing dangerously. "I keep getting told by Mystique that if I thought Wolverine, my chances of winning are slim. So, as the guy that beat him, I expect more from you."
"I'll show you more." Victor snarled out, lips twisting in a bestial fashion.
He then rushed forwards, Esau would admit this, he was quick. The distance between them had been closed in an instant, claws slashing dangerously as they aimed for his neck. It would be a killing blow if it struck. Except, Esau swung his leg up in a fashion reminiscent of Mystique, a straight leg kick that was fast and aimed directly for the underside of his chin.
A staggering blow.
Victor was skilled enough to avoid it, not quite able to bring himself to a complete stop, but agile enough to change his direction and move to one side. This change of direction did not halt his attack though, instead, he came at Esau from another angle, claws once again aiming for his neck.
But again, Esau could see it all clearly.
His head shifted, the claws cutting through the air in front of him, where his neck would have been. Victor changed the trajectory and swung them around, aiming for his eyes. Yet Esau fell back, his body becoming parallel to the ground, as his other leg swung up and struck Victor in the guard he raised, knocking him back. While Esau landed on his back, quickly flipping himself up onto his feet.
Yet Victor did not attack, he waited and watched. His evaluation of Esau changed as the young man himself, got into a stance, a traditional boxing stance with his guard raised and muscles coiled for explosive movement.
Because, just as Victor was reevaluating Esau's skill, Esau was doing the same.
It had been a short exchange, but it told Esau enough about his opponent to know that he had yet to see everything. But it did show Esau that this guy was not like anyone he had fought before. He relied upon his claws and agility in the same way Mystiue relied upon her kicks and flexibility. However, his time spent sparring with Mystique, Quicksilver and Blob were allowing him to keep this fight going.
If he hadn't, that first dash would have been the end for him.
Victor was fast and incredibly agile, but not nearly as much as Quicksilver. Even though the speedster was fond of coming at him from one direction with overwhelming speed, he could bring himself to a halt and reverse his direction quickly to the point Esau would be struck from all angles in the space of a few seconds, if that.
However, thanks to his powers, Esau had been able to see those movements as the fight progressed, even if he couldn't react to them in time. While his powers did have the downside of not retaining everything once the adrenaline was out of his system, his ability to see fast-moving objects were still much higher than a normal human. Victor was fast, but he wasn't fast enough and so, not only could Esau see his movements clearly, but he could also react to them easily.
Yet as the exchange had shown, Victor was able to easily avoid his strikes also, and at the same time, use his agility to turn a dodge into an effective counterattack. The only reason he had backed off after blocking Esau's strike was because of the strength behind it, forced to consider whether he might need to change his tactics going forward.
Strength Esau had gained from duelling Blob.
Yet Esau didn't rush in, even though he would have and wanted to. His improved kicks, but also him not rushing in, courtesy of his training under Mystique. He could see it, just as she had told him, the tenseness of his body, the way his eyes moved in response to the tensing of his own muscles.
Victor was prepared to respond the moment Esau made a move.
It was actually an external action that led to the two bursting into action once more. The other Mutants, engaged in conflict that led to both Esau and Victor rushing one another once more. Victor leapt forwards, landing upon his hands and then jumping up from his crouched position to tackle Esau, throwing them back.
In the air, Esau grabbed Victor by the shirt and the moment he landed threw him over his head, a foot lashing out to catch Victor in the stomach. Spinning around, Esau gave chase, Victor having landed on his hands and feet, turning to duck under the hook, coming round with a slash to Esau's Achilles. A slash he avoided with a raised leg that came up and around in a roundhouse kick that Victor avoided, coming up with a two-finger jab aimed at his eyes.
Esau slapped it to one side, his other hand coming out in a straight jab, fast and sharp like a boxer.
It only clipped Victor on the chin, he spinning with the momentum, claws swiping at him as he came round. Esau leaned back to avoid them just barely, forced to block Victor's second arm that came as a follow-up. Stepping in close and grabbed him by the jacket, dragging him down as he rose his knee.
But Victor grabbed it in one hand, claws digging into his flesh as he blocked the strike, pushing it down and coming up with a swipe that cut into his chest, nothing more than a papercut, courtesy of the durability he had built up from the beatings at Blob and Juggernaut. Esau didn't let this go unanswered though, a front kick catching Victor in the side with enough force to throw him back.
While Victor managed to remain on his feet though, he did bend over a little, the blow just missing his liver, but carrying enough force to shake it anyway. However, he recovered quick enough as when Esau came in, intending to capitalise upon his foe's seemingly wounded and distracted state, he was forced to quickly dodge the swipes that greeted him.
Victor's pained state while real initially, had been faked to draw Esau in and it did so.
Bobbing and weaving, Esau moved his head and body around Victor's claws, constantly stepping back as Victor closed in. Before finally making a move, twisting his body fully to one side, grabs the extended wrist and throws Victory over his head. Yet midair, Victor went with the momentum, coming round with a kick that struck Esau in the face who stumbled back with a grunt.
He landed and burst forwards once more, a cut opening up on Esau's face as he barely managed to save his eyes. Esau then came round, an uppercut aimed at Victor's solar plexus avoided as Victor slashed at Esau's leg, cutting lightly into his thigh before coming up, a knee smashing into Esau's face.
Yet while there, Esau was able to grab his hips, spin and smash him into the ground, taking the top position to smash his fist into the ground, inches away from Victor's face, the metal beneath dented deeply. There was a momentary pause, as both fighters decided what move to make next before Esau throw another fist, one that was stopped by Victor's foot pressing his bicep.
His other leg then came around, Esau ducking underneath it and before Victor could put some distance between them, Esau tackled him once more, pushing his head into the ground with one hand.
"Got ya, now you, son of a bitch."
So, here we are, another chapter done and with it, Esau and Sabretooth face off. Now, right now it's pretty evenly matched, though as you can see, Esau is getting the lion's share of the injuries, though thanks to his durability, it's the equivalent of papercuts. However, it does show that without that durability, Esau would be in a very different situation. He's good, but he's not quite at the level of the likes of Sabretooth in skill. Even so, I hope you all enjoyed this fight as I had a fun time writing it and there's still more to come.
