Maisie Hawthorne had no true attachment to the Blackwood coven. She had been orphaned when she was too young to remember her parents and a witch happened to find her and "adopt" her after realizing what she was. 

That witch had never acted as her mother. The whole coven operated communally. 

It hadn't been so bad at first. She had been shy but hadn't been outright ostracized until she passed the time she was supposed to graduate and get her own apartment and lab without finding a familiar. She was seen as defective after that. No one wanted much to do with her because they didn't want to end up like her. 

The younger witches in the dorms avoided her as if she was diseased. The older ones she used to be friends with didn't have time for her now that they were full-fledged witches.
