It was heartbreaking to know that they would never have this is the waking world, never share it with their loved ones. But he told himself that the mere act of committing to each other was still important. They needed it. They needed to quit pretending that Dakota would ever be happy with anyone else. He couldn’t even entertain the thought.

Genuinely happy, he set about piling his things into the Jeep and tying everything down. A cold wind crept into his clothes and chilled him, but he paid it no mind.

Ken appeared on the periphery of his vision, loading up her new truck. He watched with pride as she brushed a bit of road dirt off of the door. Though Dakota had serious concerns about giving Ken her own means of transportation, so far, she’d done nothing but take good care of it. And she seemed so happy to have her own wheels. Just as the mutant horse brought her joy, so did the vehicle. His vested interest in providing for Ken trumped any kind of worries in this moment.
