“Yes, I do. He’s really sweet.” Carlos felt a bit strange talking to her about this. He didn’t think he would be able to be so open about this with anyone at the ranch, so it felt nice that he could share with her.

“He is handsome. Very handsome. If I were younger, you would need to look over your shoulder.”

Carlos laughed.

“Why do you laugh? I was very beautiful when I was younger, and my hips always drove the boys crazy.” She got up and did a little dance, swinging her hips back and forth.

Carlos laughed some more. It felt good to open up with someone. “I bet they did.”

Virginia sat back down. “Damn straight they did.”

Carlos laughed even harder now.

“That’s what I like to see. You need to keep smiling, especially for your mami. She is trying to get your attention, but being mad at your brother or being sad isn’t going to help you listen to her.”

“What do you think she is trying to tell me?” Carlos asked while getting a plate of enchiladas.
