She gazed around with interest. “This is a very lovely tearoom.”

“It is. Have you never been here?”

“No.”

“My friend Thomas and I used to come by occasionally.”

“Thomas? Would that be Captain Fortescue-Smythe?”

“Yes.”

“He visited the shop shortly after I opened it.”

“Oh?” Had he been looking for something for that Sayer person?

“Yes, he wanted to select a birthday present for Lady Eugenia.”

I felt embarrassed for my uncharitable thoughts.

Fortunately, just then Miss Cox came bustling up, leading a waitress who held a tray laden with our tea. The waitress placed the teapot on the table, along with a plate with some sandwiches and a three-tiered cake stand that contained cakes, scones, and pastries.

“Thank you,” Eira murmured as Miss Cox set the pot of honey at her elbow.

“You’re very welcome, Miss. Will there be anything else?”

“No, we’re fine,” I told her.

“Well, you just let me know if you need anything.”

“Thank you.”
