I choked back a laugh and continued on, mentioning how, at the age of twenty-six, my son had passed the bar exam and had been a practicing attorney for the past year.

Tanner gave a snort of laughter. “I’ll keep him in mind should I ever have need of a barrister.”

“He’s quite good, but don’t worry about it. If you should have need, we’ll supply the best for you.”

“Ta, I’m sure.” He cleared his throat. “Thank you, luv. I’ve got to push off. The boss has sent for me.”

“Be careful, Tanner. Promise me…”

“I promise.” He hung up without saying goodbye. 15

Usually I had no problem falling asleep, but on this particular night I tossed and turned, got up to pace the floors, and then returned to bed to resume tossing and turning.

At five A.M. I finally fell into a deep sleep, but it didn’t last long.

The sound of the telephone ringing woke me. A glance at my bedside clock through bleary eyes showed me I’d only been asleep about half an hour.
