“THEY’RE ALL WELL,” Max said, although he frowned at the scars on their tiny bodies. “Biopsies, no doubt, although I can’t imagine why. Perhaps their files will enlighten me.” He stroked the small white lines on their thighs. “These, though…” He touched the marks on their abdomens. “These were for feeding tubes, and they seem healthy enough not to have had need of them.”

Dr. Paget returned from running blood tests on my son and daughter. “I know you expressed concerns about your being a carrier of factor X, but they have no trace of it.” She handed me a printout with the results of all the bloodwork. “I’m sure you’ll want to give this to the pediatrician you select for them. There were no titers in their blood, so I suggest you have them start on their inoculations.”

“That sounds like a good idea.” I’d contact Aunt Allison about which pediatrician she could recommend.

“There’s one other thing you should be aware of.” She pointed to it on the printout.
