章節 6: Loui's Help

Loui was quite the chatter box as he drove. One arm propped against the window sill, the other on the wheel of the truck. He seemed genuinely relaxed as he drove. Often, he talked about his family and where he used to live. To no surprise did I learn that he use to grow up on a farm. His father had to learn to be a mechanic, so he didn't have to bring his machines into a professional. He stereotypically like to go fishing and often times hunting too. His warm and friendly aura set me at ease as he drove. His favorite thing to talk about though, was his younger sister.

He almost seemed wistful as he spoke. There was a piece of him that wasn't willing to admit that he missed his family. He wanted a different life than what his father was trying to force him to do, so he moved away to the city and became a mechanic.

"Little Bella is such a good dancer. She picked up ballet and has become the absolute prodigy of her class. Mom always videos her recitals and practices for me to see. Seeing her smile and knowing she is doing well always puts me at such ease." But the smile didn't match his tone. I couldn't help but reflect my own pain. Missing someone was the absolute worse.

"You seem to love your sister a lot. Why don't you go back and visit?" I asked him. It wasn't my business to pry, but it felt like something was holding him back. Could it possibly be family drama? The smile faded away and was replaced with a grim tight-lipped reply.

"I promised Bella I wouldn't come home until I had enough money for her medical bills. You see, she suffers with Leukemia. I moved out here because I can do more and earn more money here than I could in the country. Despite everything she is going through, she is doing her best to put everyone at ease. She is the most kind hearted person I have ever met." The small sad smile returned. The pain I felt in his words speared my heart. I wanted to reach over and pat his shoulders. You couldn't tell him it was going to be okay, because in the end, if she dies, it wouldn't be okay. He would suffer with pain till the day he dies.

"I am very sorry to hear that Loui, she sounds like such an amazing human being. You must love her very much." I couldn't look at him anymore, knowing that tears where starting to leak from my eyes. I stared out the window, watching the trees and snow go by in a blur.

"I do a lot. I know that what she is going through isn't fair, but I know she is strong enough to beat it too. I have every ounce of faith in my little sister. After all, she is a Smith." I turned and smiled at him, knowing he was doing his very best to comfort himself. Death is never easy to talk about, so most people avoid it, or find ways around it. He was doing his best to assure himself that she would be alright, and I wanted to help keep his confidence.

The cab was filled with silence now as the city's tall buildings came into view over the tree tops. A wave of guilt came over me, knowing that Aaron would have wanted me to spend the rest of the afternoon with him rather than some stranger who helped me out with my vehicle. I didn't want to feel like I had to rely on him for everything, nor would I ask him to either. Never once while growing up did I ask anyone for help. I spent most of my life fending for myself and doing things my way. So, taking Loui up on his offer for help, was really weird to me.

As we entered the city, we immediately hit a traffic jam. Car horns honked loudly as angry and impatient people grew restlessly around us. Loui sat quietly, tapping his thumbs and fingers on the steering wheel to a song only he could hear. He was intently looking out the window until he caught me gazing at him. A smile spread across his lips as he refocused his attention out the window. I blushed with embarrassment as he caught me looking at him. Normally men didn't make me speechless or awkward, but Loui was a different case.

He wasn't a possible business partner, or someone looking to sponsor our clothes, he was a regular city folk who worked hard every day to make his livings. He wasn't after anything I had to offer, in fact, he was doing this completely on his own. Why would he offer a complete stranger a helping hand?

"Why did you offer to help me anyhow? You didn't have to?" I said quietly as I watched out the window. A couple holding hands passed the vehicle. They had such lively smiles on their faces. People walked through the streets, bustling, and crowded as they went about their day.

"Why must I have a reason for offering a hand? After last night, I figured you would like some good fortune to come your way. Is there any more reason I need?" I mean know there wasn't, but it was just weird to me. You don't normally see good Samaritans in the city.

"Aren't you worried you'll offer your services up to the wrong person?" There was a pause of silence as he pondered my question. It almost felt like an hour had went by when he answered.

"I like to think I am a good judge of character when it comes to offering my help. I mean after all, you almost hit a cat last night and you still went out of your way to take care of it. Would a psycho path or murder do that? I like to avoid the sketchy people as much as I can." He said reassuringly. I couldn't help giggle at his response. Not all people who appeared good where bad, and not all the appeared bad where good. But it wasn't my place to tell him this, although he may be a friendly face, he wasn't someone I could council. I just hoped that his kindness wouldn't put him in a bad spot. He genuinely seemed like a nice person, and maybe that looked good now, but down the road he could end up in a pickle.

"Ah we are finally here. The one thing I do hate about the city, is the long rows of traffic."
