What is this world that is hastening me toward I know not what, viewing me with contempt? - Kahlil Gibran
The corridors of the colony outside the council chamber close in around me, sucking all the air from my lungs. I'm lost and alone.
A stairwell comes into view. My heavy feet take the stairs two at a time. When I hit the top of the platform, I break out into an open run.
Tears stream down my face. They cloud my vision, but I keep running. The hallway narrows, and I slow my pace. The markers overhead provide a sliver of familiarity. I'm close to Gaila's quarters.
"I know you're home." I rap on the door twice. "Gaila. Please let me in."
The door swings open. She stands inside the door frame. "Pet, why are you here? Where is Vlad? You are not cleared to travel alone."
"Please, Gaila. I don't have anywhere else to go."
