We both stood there for what seemed like hours, glaring at each other when Mrs James spoke up.
"You're both out. Great, dinner will be ready in a few." I didn't even see her walk over to where we were standing till she spoke up.
Perv. I quipped and then just as I turned to leave I heard him say.
“Youll regret ever coming here.
And that sent a few chills on my spine. I shook my head as if to shake off the feeling.
I looked up at Owen and tried to say something but he just went back to his room making sure he banged the door. I still wasn't sure what his problem was with me. I walked over to the kitchen to try and help Pauline out with whatever was left.
"Can I help with something?" I asked when I saw her getting something from the fridge.
She looked up at me with surprise and then smiled. "Oh sure. You can help with setting the table." I wasn't sure were what was kept where so I randomly opened the cabinets. "The plates are over there and the cups are in here. Cutlery is over there." She assisted. Pointing to where I could find everything.
I took the plates over to the dinner table and placed them on the table mats and put the glasses and cutlery in order. After I was done with that, I helped her bring in some of the food over to the table.
"Can you please call Owen and tell him dinner is ready?"
"Uh, sure."
I headed over to Owen's room and knocked on the door a few times before the door opened.
"What do you want?"
"Dinner's ready," I tried not to stammer and bee-lined for the dining room.
**********
Dinner was as awkward as I'd hoped it not to be. Mrs James tried to make conversation but it didn't go so well with Owen always finding something to mutter under his breath so that only I could hear it. I did try ignoring him but in between my mum leaving and me staying with almost complete strangers I lost it and told Mrs James that I was feeling unwell and went over to my room. I did feel guilty for acting in such a way because she had been nothing but kind and lovely towards me and she didn't deserve any of that.
I was on the bed lying flat on my back and staring at ceiling trying to overlook everything bad and trying to foresee the good but it was going to take a while for that to happen.
I decided to call it a night and got under the covers.
It was Monday morning and I didn't know how I was going to get to school. I did manage to wake up on time but I didn't know if walking to school would be ideal.
I got out of bed and did my morning routine and dressed up in a plain white tee and some light blue jeans and paired it with white toms. I took my book bag and walked out of the room.
"Good morning Mrs James." I greeted as I saw her busy making some pancakes.
"Oh morning dear. Are you feeling better now?"
"Yes thank you."
"Here you go," she said as she passed me a plate of freshly made pancakes. I said thank you and sat down by the kitchen counter before pouring some syrup on the pancakes and dug in.
Moments into my eating, Owen came in a light grey t-shirt and black jeans with black vans.
He was good looking that was something I had to admit. From his jet black mane of hair, to his sea blue eyes that looked like a storm was ever brewing. He wasn't built up in a muscular way but he wasn't lean either. I looked up to find him staring at me and I looked away embarrassed that he'd caught me staring.
He came over to the counter and sat across from where I was seated and ate his plate of pancakes faster than I could have imagined.
He gave Mrs James a kiss on the cheek and was about to walk out before she reminded him that he was supposed to give me a ride to school. He looked at me begrudgingly and told me to hurry up before walking out of the door. I quickly got up from my seat and washed down the pancakes with some juice and bid Mrs James goodbye.
I rushed over to Owen's car and tried to open the passenger door but Owen told me to sit behind. I figured he was picking someone up, maybe one of his friends, so I opened the back door and sat down. The car seats were covered in leather and the smell in the compartment of it was a mixture of leather and a bit of what I'd picked up to be Owen's smell.
He started the car and drove off without saying a thing. The ride was awkward, well at least for me it was. I tried sparking up a conversation but decided against it. I didn't need to hear any more of his rudeness.
I hadn't noticed where we were till Owen parked beside a house and out came a girl I'd never seen before. She had really nice long brown hair and she wore clothes that accentuated her curvy structure. Everything about her was intimidating and I tried my best not to think about how I lacked in the curvy area.
She opened the door and threw herself at Owen. I didn't know if she'd noticed that I was seated behind or she just didn't care.
They kissed for what felt like hours and to say I was uncomfortable would be putting it kindly. I tried busying myself with my phone and played candy crush but the sound of them passionately kissing made me lose focus on the game. I finally cleared my throat to remind them that I was still in the car before things got more heated than they already had.
They pulled apart and the girl was breathing heavily, trying to grasp as much air as she could after her spit exchanged but Owen on the other hand looked as calm as could be. The girl turned over at me with her turquoise coloured eyes.
"Who the hell are you?" she asked with an arched eye brow.
