Chapter 9
We had to walk in a stealthy manner. It was a 10 kilometer walk from the EVAC CAMP to the orphanage, on any normal day that would take two to three hours by foot. But this is not a normal day. It's hell. We needed to avoid the main roads to get there. We had to walk alleyways and jump from one fence to another. It was a good thing that all of the civilians were already evacuated. We'd look like fools barging from one house after another.
"How many kilometers more?" Noelle asked, looking from her shoulder to me. She then looked at her watch, "the last plane is about to leave in thirty minutes."
Queencie was behind me looking at her tablet. "We'll be there in an hour if you stop whining, Princess." She muttered under her breath.
I heard Noelle making a huffing sound, "Whatever you midget." she muttered enough for everyone to hear. These two had been bickering since we started walking, so, I gave up mothering them. I just let them do their thing.
Queencie is carrying a huge backpack because of her System Unit. Yes, she was carrying a computer with her. She's using it to monitor everything around us, from street CCTVs to private CCTV channels. She's the reason why we haven't faced off with those bats yet. "We can cross the road here then we'll be heading straight towards the orphanage. But we'll have to cross maybe seven estates? I'm not really sure since these properties are huge."
"As long as we get there." I said taking the lead because we are going to cross the road towards the first estate we'll be passing by. I had to crawl inside a tall bush reaching the edge of the road. I then looked both ways to check if it was clear for us to cross. I then signed for them to hurry up and go. We'll need to hurry up before sundown. We needed to enter the tunnels before sun down. Those bats would be lurking more when it's dark, that'll be very hard for us to move then.
A few minutes later, Chealsea walked towards me. "We need to move faster." Chealsea murmured looking at me. We were moving as fast as we could but we were still moving as fast as the slowest member of our team. "Remember what Mushka said? They are taking the adults away from the kids. At this rate there won't be any adults to help us with those kids." She had a point so I had to comply, as a leader I needed to be open to my member's survival. I nodded and she walked ahead to her position.
"Queencie!" I called her. She was now walking ahead of me. "I'll take your bag, you take mine. We need to move faster." She just nodded and gave me her huge bag. It weighed like a ton of brick. No wonder we were moving so slow. "Alright ladies, let's move it!" I called them and we started a jog. I may be a girl, but I can carry an adult male for a whole day. It's all in my training. We started gaining ground a little faster from then on.
After forty-five minutes of non-stop jogging, we were a block away from the orphanage. The sun was about to set. We could see vampires starting to emerge from the shadows. "Are they guarding the orphanage?" Queencie asked, looking at her tablet. She was continuously tapping on the screen as well. Window upon window of CCTV channels were popping and collapsing from her tablet's screen. "They seem to be gathering mostly around the orphanage."
"It's food. Animals gather around food." Chealsea said bitterly. She was looking through the scope of her Coyote Rifle. " They'll be as good as dead if we don't act now." she said in a hushed tone, demanding us to do something about the current situation. Chealsea was never as patient in taking order as the others but she's still my right hand man.
"We need to access the south entrance. It's the quickest way to the room where they are being held." Queencie murmured. "Their heat signature is so low but they are still detectable by infrared. They have at least six to eight guards from the hallways. And They have, I think, what looks like a very large dog in the perimeter of the building. We can access the underground tunnel here," she pointed at the south gate of the orphanage in the map that she was showing in her tablet. "Then we can pop inside the kitchen, here. Is that okay enough for us to go in?"
"That's the only way in without any commotion right?" I asked her, "We need to be extra careful with our plan, we need to go in as fast as we can get out. The kitchen is two walls away from the hall they are being held on right?" Quencie nodded her reply. "Do we have enough explosives to blow those walls?" I pointed at the blueprint of the orphanage then looked around for answers.
"I have enough to blow two passable holes." Noelle answered my question. She knows how to handle explosives as much as any of us, but she was the only one who packed some. "But they can easily hear us, so the blowing should be as fast as taking those kids to the kitchen's tunnel." She then paused for a little while and started fiddling with the blueprint. "Or can we use the ceiling?" she finally said, showing the ventilation system of the building on the tablet. "Are the building's vents strong enough to support our weight?" Noelle was looking at Queencie.
She has her thumb on her lips in deep thought, she looked like kissing her thumb. "I know it could, Alfonse had it repaired a few years back." Answering Noelle's question. "We could plant some explosives on the walls. Then we can assist the kids to run through the holes after the explosion? That's the best thing I've got. What do you think, boss?"
"Chel, you stay in the kitchen to keep watch. The three of us will climb the vents. Queen, you plant the first explosive in the first room, while Noelle you do the second room. I'll assist the kids on running through the holes." I said the strategy in my head.
"Sounds good to me." Queencie agreed. She then took her tablet then started tapping on it once again. "Alright, I locked every door that is wifi enabled. They'll be having a hard time getting to us unless of course they kick the doors down." She was smiling cheekily at us that she looked like a kindergartener with an evil plan.
After gathering all our needed things we silently stalked towards the south gate of the orphanage where we could pry open the entrance to the underground tunnels. The tunnels had been in our town for more than a hundred years but I know in my heart that it's our only chance of escape. The sun was starting to set as we finally reached the entrance.
Queencie took a little trinket from her packet. "This little thing can break you out of prison." she said, showing it to us. She then placed it in between the tonnel's closed entrance. The entrance looked like an old shack with very thick metal sliding doors. It gave a creaking metal sound at first, before sliding smoothly to the sides. The little trinket had pushed the door apart. Queencie squealed in delight as she entered the entrance to the tunnels. "Come on. It's not going to hold the door open all night!"
One by one we entered the tunnels. The moment Queencie pulled her little trinket from the doors it closed so abruptly like in one of those horror sci-fi movies where monsters are eating everyone one by one. It was pitch black inside. We had to break some of our neon light sticks to at least give us a little illumination. We let Queencie lead the way since she had her map. The tunnels are different from the sewage lines, though it can be accessed through it. The orphanage's kitchen has a big hole that leads to the sewage, we'll be able to enter from there. Hopefully none of those bats are hanging around the area.
I am just praying that luck would be on our side as we rescue our kids.
