Joe was watching. His mistake. The noise had been loud enough to penetrate. The door was wrenched open and he fell in. Fearful for Lisa, Robert tried to catch her but by then she had seen the gun and her boyfriend standing before it. Then Robert had a real struggle on his hands as he held her to him, squirming, kicking, hitting him with her fists. 'Stop him,' she begged, 'Don't let them hurt him.'

'Why would they hurt him?' Robert managed between grunts.

'So their mother doesn't get into trouble.'

'Lisa, shut up.'

She probably didn't hear Greg in her attempts to get free. What she thought she could achieve was anyone's guess.

'Now what are we going to do?' Remo demanded.
