I prepared myself for the onslaught of rain but found instead the clouds had broken and a sliver of moonlight reflected on the wet street. Standing in front of our building, I drew myself up straight and took a long breath in. The air smelled cold and fresh, the fragrances of dirt and rain mingling with fresh brewed coffee from the café and the sweet aroma of tomato sauce from the bistro.

I turned right, my step light, my heart filled with hope for the first time in twenty-four hours. I couldn’t believe it had really only been that short a time - but now with the key and Father Morel’s willingness to help me, I believed I could get rid of Helena for good. And once Miri knew the truth of all that I experienced in Hell, there’d be nothing between us. I’d tell her everything and never, ever let anything come between us again.
