Miri’s stomach rumbled and we both fell into a fit of giggles that morphed into a tickle fight. The most ticklish girl ever, it wasn’t long before I had Miri hiccupping so hard, they sounded like burps. And then we just…stopped.

She lay beneath me, my right arm braced by her head, my left hand slipping under her T-shirt, glorying in the smooth, taut skin of her stomach. Her face flushed, her bright eyes sparkling. When our eyes met, everything came rushing back. The way everything had changed by Hel’s arrival. The promise that Paris hadn’t been an escape at all - it had only been a diversion.

“James.” Miri’s voice met my ears like a caress, like a request. It was time now. Time to tell her everything.

“I know.” Reluctantly I pulled myself up and offered her my hand. “Let’s get some food first, okay? Then I’ll tell you everything. I promise.”
