Penelope sighed. Roman had offered to be the stay-at-home parent until their child was old enough to go to preschool but there was one thing he didn't understand about the situation. Sexism in the workplace. 

Sure, most offices these days claimed to promote equality but everyone knew it was much harder for women to climb the ladder than men. More talented women frequently got passed over by mediocre men for stupid reasons. 

Children were one of those reasons. Penelope had seen it firsthand. 

Of all the creative directors at work (assistant or otherwise), only one was a woman. A divorced woman in her forties with no children. 

Her friend Max, who hadn't worked at the company as long as his cousin Alison, got promoted to assistant creative director over her. The quality of her work was about the same as Max's but she had a three-year-old son and had left the office once or twice to deal with an emergency when his daycare called.
