1976, 27 January- Tuesday.
He was able to reach the class before Professor McGonagall. He entered the class, completely unfazed by the talk with Sirius.
That wasn't going to ruin his day. Corvus was sat in the middle. The row he was sitting was also close to the back, which he would call 'middle-back'. He was sat at the edge of the row, with Arius Welby on his right- he was sure he wasn't the only one to find him annoying.
Welby was a pureblood, so he had met the boy once or twice before Hogwarts, but Polaris didn't remember much. He just knew he wasn't going to befriend him, only be 'nice' for connections, as he was the Welby heir to the House of Welby, known for their wealth, which they obtain from their trading company, 'The Well-Bys.'
Looking over at Corvus again, he could see he was concentrated, looking down at some book, ah, the book for this class, which he too had in his hand after getting it from his dorm.
He smiled mischievously, taking light steps towards Corvus, which gained some amused looks from some of his classmates who saw him walk past them. Then Welby turned around, hearing someone from the row behind him snort, "What's funny." He demanded to know.
Then their eyes locked, and Welby understood what he Ws trying to do. "Scion Avery, it seems Scion Black is trying to scare you." He said hauntingly.
Corvus turned immediately and grinned, "Took you long enough to get that book." Corvus told him as the boy swung around on the stool, facing his friend.
"Annoying git," Polaris said under his breath, watching Welby turn back to the boy he was talking to that was on his right.
Corvus suppressed a laugh as he glanced at Welby, knowing who Polaris was referring to, "I have to deal with him every Transfiguration lesson." Corvus whispered in disdain, "here, look, let's go to your desk," Corvus said, getting up from his stool. Welby turned to see Corvus getting up.
"You can't do that," the boy said. Corvus turned to him, "Oh? And why can't I do that, scion Welby? Is there a rule against it that I have yet to learn?" Corvus asked in a condescending tone. Welby scoffed, "Our professor will be here soon. Do what you want. I don't care." Welby responded, looking away.
"Well, you obviously care enough to ask what I was doing, but yes, thank you, scion Welby for giving me 'permission' to do what I want." Corvus drawled. Welby didn't look back. He just continued staring ahead, the tips of his ears reddening at the words. The way he had said 'Welby' was disrespectful, and his tone didn't help at all.
Corvus smirked in victory.
"Interesting." An amused Polaris said to his friend, "Interesting indeed," Corvus responded, "Want to know what else is interesting?" Polaris asked as they headed to his desk, where Rena and Wilson were seated. The rows all fit three students.
"What?" Corvus asked, "You bringing your book with you… you could have just left it at your desk." Polaris said, taking his seat. "It's not the Transfiguration one. It's been charmed to change the cover. It's a book on jinxes." Corvus told him.
"Hey, Polaris, Corvus," Rena said, smiling brightly at them as Polaris sat. Corvus walked around in between the desks and stood in front of them.
"Corvus, Polaris, excited for the quiz?" Wilson greeted them.
"Quiz? We have a quiz?" Corvus said dumbly, then looked to Polaris, "Don't look at me like that! I didn't know either," Polaris defended himself.
Polaris shifted his stool backwards to get a better look at his tablemates, "Do you know what it's on?" Polaris asked them. Rena shook her head, "Nope, I was planning on just winging it. What can one bad quiz do?" She replied as she shrugged her shoulders.
Corvus hummed, "Great mindset! I'll be winging it too. Well, it's not like I have a choice in the matter anyway." Corvus spoke loftily.
"Did you study for it, Wilson?" Polaris ask, looking at the boy. The boy snorted, "I hardly think anyone studied for it. She only mentioned it at the end of yesterday's lesson. No one was listening then because we were all talking, and most of the class left, including you two, so I'm not surprised you don't know about it. I think she exected those who were there to tell everyone else." He said.
"I feel left out!" a voice said, looking over to their right. It was Aaron, "Aaron, did you know about the quiz?" Corvus asked the boy who had just approached them.
Aaron looked taken aback, "There's a quiz?" he responded, "Since when was there a quiz? I would have written it in my journal."
Rena began laughing, "It would be funny to see her face if we all fail." She lightly commented, "Oh, she'd be mad." Wilson responded.
"She'll give us another of those speeches on being prepared." Aaron groaned. He rested his arms on the desk as his head hit the table. "What if we just convince her to move it till Wednesday or Thursday?" Wilson mused, "Do you think she'll do that?" Polaris questioned him.
"Better Thursday than Wednesday, seeing as that's tomorrow." Corvus contributed.
"Well, not many people know about it, so it should be easy to convince everyone to help convince her not to give us the test," Wilson said.
Corvus placed his book on the desk, walking away from them to the centre of the room, "HEY, GUYS!" he yelled. The chatter and giggles stopped as all their heads turned to Corvus.
"What is this bloody idiot doing" Aaron muttered, "He's… um, you know", Polaris helpfully said as he too felt slightly embarrassed.
"Did you guys know about the quiz for today's class?!" he asked them in a loud voice. People's heads turned to each other, raising their brows as they began asking questions.
"Wha' are ye' on abou' Avery?"
"A quiz?"
"You're pulling our legs."
"He's only messin'."
"You know what, I think I vaguely remember her mentioning something about a quiz yesterday. Before that, I think she mentioned it last week Thursday too…"
Welby glared at Corvus, "Of course, I knew we had a quiz. Only an idiot wouldn't have known that. Just sit down already. She'll be here soon." Welby snapped, unknowingly not realising he called practically the whole class idiots. Only a few knew but didn't study, and the rest just didn't know about it altogether.
He didn't seem to notice the glares being sent his way as he began jotting notes.
Corvus scowled at him, decisively going back to where his friends were, "What an arse" Wilson murmured, "I feel like using one of these jinxes on him", Corvus spat one as he took hold of his book.
"Why not? It'll be the highlight of the day, perhaps during class, that'll surely distract Professor McGonagall from giving us a quiz." Polaris slyly said.
They gave him amused smiles, "Perhaps he'll learn to stop being so self-righteous.' Rena mused, "I'm all for doing that. What types of jinxes are there" Aaron said, taking the book from Corvus, flipping through the book, all of them leaning over to see the spells.
"I don't know if I'll be able to cast them. I might not pronounce them right," Corvus sadly said but looked to Aaron hopefully, "Hey, don't look at me. We don't even know what spell we're using." Aaron said.
"What about this one," Wilson said, pointing to a jinx. 'They'll tell you everything' was all that was written beside the spell.
"What do you think it means by everything? Like everything surely, it doesn't do exactly that," Corvus said.
"We'll try it and find out, so who'll do the spell? I think I can," Polaris said.
"Alright, students, get to your seats!" A voice said it was their professor, "I'll do it, here wait-" kk said, scanning the spell, memorising it. Aaron stood back smiling, "I can't wait." He whispered before walking towards the front row.
"Okay, you can take it now, Corvus," Wilson told Corvus, who was grinning like crazy, "This'll be brilliant, and I sit right next to him too! I'll sit back from the table so you get a better angle. Just don't hit me, alright?" Corvus said.
"Don't worry, I have faith in Wilson," Polaris told his friend, who finally walked off with his book towards his desk.
"Alright, first things first. The quiz!" their professor spoke again. Groans were heard throughout the room.
"Professor! No one knew about this quiz, right everyone?" a Ravenclaw girl said.
The class's agreement was to follow suit.
"Nonsense, I told you about this last week and reminded you yesterday. You will be doing this quiz today. Nothing you say will change that!"
"I knew about it, professor!" Welby said loudly.
Wilson turned to Polaris, "What was it again?" he whispered, "vera omnia", Polaris whispered back to him. Rena was at the end of her seat, waiting for Wilson to cast the spell. The boy pointed his wand at the boy before he said another word.
"Vera omnia."
"Wonderful, I see I can trust Weby to listen." Their professor spoke as sheets began to float in the air, landing on each of their desks.
"Yes, I can tell you Corvus Avery didn't… He's a prat, you know, thinking he's above everyone. You'd think he'd take the hint of shutting up. He's not funny- um, I didn't mean to um-" Welby looked horrified at what he had just said, his face flushing into red. He looked at Corvus, who was smirking.
"What are you looking at, you fucking prat? Stop it! You'd wonder who taught you your manners, you mother? Oh, no, that's right, you fucking retard, SHE'S FUCKING DEAD!" He spoke again. The boy slammed his hand over his mouth, and his eyes widened.
You could hear a pin drop at how quiet the class was.
"MR WELBY, APOLOGISE TO MR AVERY RIGHT THIS INSTANT." Professor McGonagall yelled at him, completely appalled by his behaviour.
"But professor, I didn't mean to- Oh, shut up, you old hag! I'm fucking tired of listening to your overbearing voice."
"Someone's in trouble" a voice sang out in amusement, he heard it- "no one asked you, they should make a wizarding school back in Wales for youse," again he didn't mean to say that.
"OUT, MR WELBY NOW"
"So, you have something against the Welsh?" A voice said from the row in front of them. It was a girl, Rory Rees, a Ravenclaw. It was common knowledge she was Welsh.
She was a nice girl too but wouldn't be shy to put you in your place. She was one of the seven Welsh students in the class, with some being from Scotland while the rest were from England, just as Polaris was.
"Oh shut up, you faggot. Everyone fucking knows you like girls- Too bad you'll have trouble ever kissing, seeing as it looks like your mother installed an escape hatch for your bottom row of teeth!" Again he slapped his hand to his mouth, no longer trusting his mouth.
"Mr Welby, you will be attending a month worth of detention. You will apologise to myself, Mr Avery and Miss Thomspon, do you hear me?!" Professor McGonagall said, her voice stern and threatening, as she glared at the boy.
The boy who was seen as 'Mr Perfect' was always 'polite' and 'kind', one of the most 'diligent' students.
Polaris had to look away, his hands covering his face, tears falling as he was forcing his laughter in. He was too funny.
Rena herself looked like she was having a hard time with how puffed her cheeks were. She looked like a chipmunk with that method she was using to stop laughing. A squeak excaped his lips, Rena making him want to laugh more than he already did.
Wilson's mouth was trembling terribly. Looking around the class, a few people had annoyed looks directed at Welby, while the rest were doing just as Polaris, Rena, and Wilson were trying to do, which was not laugh.
"A month? Professor but- Are you fucking mad? I didn't mean to do that or say it. I was only saying it in my head! Why in Merlin's saggy balls would I say all that!" again, his mouth defied him. He looked so ready to bury himself in a hole.
"You cum guzzling chucklefuck!"
The class couldn't take it anymore. That was it. The laughter filled the silence after what Arius Welby had just said.
"What did he just bloody say?!" Rena said through her laughter. Polaris couldn't answer her because he was wheezing from laughter, barely even breathing. With the moments of laughter that finally sounded out, then he would go back to wheezing.
"He said, 'Cum guzzling chucklefuck', what the heck does that even mean?!" Wilson told her as he tried to calm himself down, only to laugh again after a few seconds.
Professor McGonagall had already escorted him out of the class, which only led to the laughter increasing.
After the class, that was all they could table about. The story of what Arius Welby had done had been spread like wildfire. Even amused seventh years had heard about it, as it was lunch the story was told.
It was already the end of the day for Polaris, and he was with Nathaniel. Nathaniel had asked if he wanted to go to the room of requirement with him and Polaris said 'yes'.
They both finished their classes at 3pm, so they had a few hours until dinner.
"Seriously? I never would have thought you guys would do that," Nathaniel said, trying to stop his laughs, hearing the story from Polaris, "Though we might get him again, he made fun of Corvus for not having a mum. Yeah, sure, he was supposed to say it in his head, but we're still planning on getting revenge with Corvus." Polaris said.
"Oh? What do you guys have in mind?" Nathaniel asked curiously, "Covrus is thinking that we apparently 'kidnap' him, take his clothes and leave him stranded in the forbidden forest, saying he'll be too embarrassed to walk back to the school without clothes." Polaris said nonchalantly.
"He'll be fine. He can just go to Hagrids hut." Polaris added, "It would be common sense to do that," Polaris again added quickly after.
"Wait, tonight? Doesn't he have detention- wait, can I go too?" Nathaniel asked. Polaris shrugged his shoulders, "Sure. Then it'll be myself, you, Corvus and Aaron. We'll talk about it at dinner. We'll tell you after it."
Polaris and Nathaniel hadn't done much, mostly talking about random things while duelling for practice.
To Polaris' surprise, he was pretty good, at least better than the people he had partnered up with in D.A.D.A. It didn't seem as surprising when Nathaniel told him his uncle was head Auror, so his uncle was always sending him books and tips, and he even got to witness his uncle duelling on fo his subordinates over the Yule Holiday.
"Teach me that fire spell you just used," Nathaniel said out of breath. Polaris nodded, "Yeah, sure. We'll trade. You tell me how you did that delay thing with the spell and saying the incantation. That's handy."
Eventually, it was dinner, and they spoke about the plan, which they then later told Nathaniel, who stood waiting for them at the entrance of the Great Hall, brimming with excitement. The plan had gone to plan, to Corvus' delight, but what Polaris didn't expect was the next day for Sirius to be pulling him aside.
"Where were you?!" Sirius demanded in a hushed manner. Polaris was taken back by his tone, "What do you mean, where was I?" Polaris answered slowly.
"I mean exactly what I said. Where were you? You weren't in Hogwarts-"
"What do you mean I wasn't at Hogwarts" Polaris questioned, confused as he cut off his brother. How would he know whether he was in the school or not?
"I was tacking you on the m-" Sirius stopped talking altogether, his heart pounding after nearly finishing the sentence, while Polaris raised his brow at the abrupt stop.
"…on the what, Sirius?" Polaris pried; his eyes narrowed at his brother after noticing how his brother had stopped his sentence.
After silence took over, Polaris spoke again, tired of waiting for his brother to think of an excuse. It was obvious that he was truly thinking of how to form his next sentence with the faces he was making.
"Sirius, were you tracking me?" Polaris inquired, his eyes still slightly narrowed as he waited for a response from his tense brother.
"Not at all. Why would I track you? Better question, how would I even track you! It's ridiculous, really." Sirius spoke out in a slightly high-pitched voice.
"I mean, you could be tracking me with… let's say a map. You said and I quote, 'I was tracking you on the mmmm'- what could the 'word' possibly be that begins with 'm' an fits in that sentence", Polaris said dramatically, as both his brows raised in amusement.
"No! I mean, of course not. You're just making things up now," Sirius mumbled, while Polaris just huffed at his brother's horrible lying.
"Well, then what made you think I wasn't in the school then? Even though I was might I add," Polaris continued.
"I never said you weren't at Hogwarts…" Sirius trailed off.
'Is he being serious right now?'
"I'll be off now," Sirius said a bit too quickly.
"Wait-" Polaris called out, but his brother had already headed off. He wanted to know why his brother was even looking for him in the first place.
Now, something else has piqued his interest… how was his brother tracking him? It was definitely a map- he needs to get his hands on this 'map''.
