January 1886
A few months after the siege of Manila
Sergio is currently leading his Division of 10,000 men of Russian Mercenaries including around 20,000 filipino Revolutionaries who volunteered to fight for the country.
Mauricio himself knows that he doesn't have the capabilities to strategize as he is not that type of leader, he's more of a fighter so he let Sergio take the reigns of strategizing the grand scheme of things while he lead his soldiers on the frontlines, he is mostly leading the filipino revolutionaries while Sergio handles the russian mercenaries because Sergio can speak Russian while Mauricio cannot.
A few tanks and greyhounds were assigned to their division which they immediately took advantage of by making them proceed as the vanguard while the men on foot take the rear, the blitzkrieg strategy that was introduced by Renaldo has been very effective to the point that Mauricio's division is now currently on their last destination, the babuyan islands.
The Babuyan Islands is the bane of the Tigers and the Greyhounds with its muddy and undeveloped terrain, which lead to it naturally neutralizing the blitzkrieg strategy made by Renaldo, this led to an adjustments of strategies that Sergio has conducted, they reverted to the usual primitive strategy of their contemporary war strategies instead of the main strategy introduced by Renaldo. This is a temporary adjustment though as they have already sent a message to Renaldo to ask for some advice on what strategies to use on this type of scenario.
Babuyan Fortress Siege,
February, 1886.
One month after reaching the island's periphery.
Mauricio's POV
"This has been a really easy campaign compared to what I've faced in my military days in Spain but at the same time it pains me to see that my former comrades in the army are getting mowed by our forces, I even had to kill one of my former friends in the army a few months ago, which led me to confine myself for a couple of days to adjust my bearings, it has been an easy campaign but for me, it is one of the hardest complete in my entire life" Contemplated Mauricio as he steeled and prepared himself before attacking the enemy fortress.
In the Spanish Fortress stationed in the center of the island
The remaining Spaniards are headed by a lieutenant general of the cagayan province named Roberto Calderon
He is a rising star of the Spanish Army and was designated here in the Philippines to gain some experience, he's supposed to be designated to the Mainland by next year but unfortunately, war broke out and their communication lines were cut whether if it's communication inside the country or external modes of communication to atleast send messages to Spain or Guam.
In a room filled with ammo boxes and other military supplies, Roberto and his most trusted man, Captain Henry are convening a strategic meeting about their current situation.
Roberto : What are the status reports of our outer defensive positions? How are they faring Captain Henry?
Henry : According to the last message sent by our men, the outer rings are currently locked in a stalemate given that those moving chunks of steel cannot cross the natural barriers of our base, so the enemies have decided to dig some trenches and set up their own perimeter and siege us using artilleries, they are probably confident about sieging us for a long time given that they have probably predicted that our supplies are currently running low.
Roberto : We're doomed Henry, but we still have a glimmer of hope in the form of the incompetence of our enemies' troops, the only forces that we have to be wary of are those Russian mercs, because those revolutionaries that they have gathered are not that good in terms of shooting and discipline, so if we can make sure that we attack a position that is chock full of those filipinos instead of the russians, we might have a chance to break out of this stalemate and go south, towards the capital to atleast warn the governor-general, he will probaby even help us retake the whole northern regions.
Henry : But sir, our scouts have reported that the enemy russian mercs don't focus themselves on a single place but instead are scattered in groups in the trenches, to fortify the filipino revolutionaries!
Roberto : Then that's even better than expected! The russian mercs are spread out and are thinned out towards the trenches, which means we can take advantage of those and break out of their formation! We can attack the easiest spot to break through through brute force and sheer manpower! This lessens the impact of those Russians because they can't band together and form a single cohesive units! They cannot stop us from just breaking out and making a run for it towards the capital with the help of our caballeros!
Henry : That will be plausible but the biggest hurdle for that strategy is how will we break out against the sheer power of their guns? Especially those guns that works like our nordenfelt guns except they are faster and have more rounds? Those guns will mow down our men like hot knife through butter general, we only have 20,000 men that we have gathered throughout the province during our retreat, how many men are going to die while we break out? I think we need to think about this more general, because I estimate that with the help of those guns, we might lose half or more than half of our men if we blindy charge. Also, there is still the threat of those warmachine of theirs in their rear, those machines are probably waiting for us just in case.
Roberto: You're probably right but we don't have a choice anymore! We will run out of food in two weeks time! And our men's morale are running low! I predict that their morale will hit rock bottom if we ration our supplies, we will be like a frog who jumped in to a constantly heating pan of water, so it's better to solve this dilemma right now instead of letting those factors decide our fate, it's our only choice captain.
Roberto looked grim as he looked outside his room, seeing the various layers of trenches sprawled all over his fortress, the situation looks bleak for them and this is their only way of survival...
