Because of his father's deeds, at 12 years old, William was held prisoner at Beatrice's so-called home. He had been ripped from the only home he had ever known. It was his father's harem. Since his birth, he lived there with his mother, His Father was king, and she was his favorite concubine. The other concubines were not allowed to have children. Since his father loved his mother, he wanted her to bear his seed. 

Over the years, William rarely saw his father, and when he did, he would be an angry drunk man who spent his time beating his mother. Some nights he would force William to watch. His father had told him that women were to be used for his enjoyment, like toys, and when they displeased him, they should be punished. He had made sure to show him just how to punish them, using his mother as the decoy. He, like his mother, had no choice in the matter and could not refuse the king's wishes.
