She leaned back against the plush leather of the car. The family driver of the Nakamura's was playing some jazz music on the car stereo. 

Yet, the music didn't fully register in her mind. She was thinking of what she could possibly do now that the talk of marriage was out in the open. 

She knew that it wouldn't take long before her mother would call the old Nakamura, and then, he would call for her to have another talk. 

She respects the friendship that their family developed over the years because of her and Mei Mei's friendship, however, she felt suffocated with the idea of confirming whatever was acceptable to avoid any problem between their families. 

More than ever, Laurie found herself regretting her decision to run to Japan when her mother gave her the list of her potential husbands. She could have flown to Singapore or Hong Kong. Even Korea would be much better if she knew this situation would happen.
