Chapter 22: Torn

I’m numb. That’s the only way that I can describe how I feel right now. As I look down at my father’s fragile form, my heart shatters. My father’s such a good man that it destroys me to see him this way. I don’t understand why fate had to be so unkind to him. For years we struggled to survive, and this is how it ends.

Sobbing softly, I lean my head on Ewan’s shoulder as I watch my father’s body slowly deteriorate. Ewan has been so supportive, holding me through this. I don’t know what I would have done without him. Willa takes a seat beside my father’s bed and grips his hand tightly. For years, it has been me, Willa, and dad. We’ve been through so much together.

Ewan takes a chair from the wall, pushes me gently into it. “I’ll be back, Luv.”

I wordlessly nod my head. I’m too distraught to talk. If I do, I don’t know that I won’t fall apart. All I can think of is that my dad is dying.
