Black Manor | 25th December 1985 | 9 AM
Neville, Harry and Charlus were all sleeping in a wide bed that Sirius had made by joining two other beds. Since they were only going to be together for a few days, they wanted to sleep together too. They were sleeping very peacefully, and they would have been doing the same for another 2 hours, but Sirius decided they shouldn't.
Sirius felt that Christmas was the best holiday one could experience as a kid. This was partly due to his own experience when he was a kid. When he was at Hogwarts, Christmas was the only holiday he celebrated with his best friends, and it was the only holiday when he was away from his horrid family.
He turned into his dog animagus form and jumped onto their bed.
"Woof woof," he barked very loudly.
The boys stirred slowly.
"I don't want to wake up Padfoot," Charlus said sleepily.
Sirius jumped off the bed and morphed into his human form.
"If you don't get up, you won't get presents. Since your not getting up, no presents." Sirius started walking towards the door. He got a few good steps before the kids shot up from their bed.
"We are up. Don't take our presents." Charlus raced in front of Sirius towards the living room. They had set a Christmas tree along with Neville the day after he had arrived, though Tonky had done most of the work. Charlus was followed by Harry and Neville. Sirius gave them a head start, and then morphed into his dog form and chased after them.
The four came to the tree and all the kids immediately started tearing their presents open. Harry got a board game called Monopoly and a toy broom. Neville got the exact same things, but they were in a different colour. Charlus got a book from Remus on Alchemy and a long package from Sirius. When he saw the package, he dropped the book immediately. The package was bigger than Harry's and Neville's. He opened the package and felt very happy at what he had gotten. It was a real broom.
The difference between a real broom and a toy broom was huge. Toy brooms could only fly 3 meters above the ground, but real brooms could fly as much as 30 meters into the sky. Real brooms flew thrice as fast as toy brooms, and while they weren't as good as racing brooms, they were very comfortable. They were a gesture, a gesture from parents that said that they were now not kids, but something more. Someone with responsibility. Of course, Charlus cared more that he could now fly 30 meters above the ground. He wasn't a great flier, but he enjoyed the thrill.
He opened the package and found a Nimbus Casual Broom. He got up and was ready to fly, but his godfather stopped him.
"You still have some presents."
Charlus looked back and saw that there were still 6 unopened presents, all with his name on them. He checked them, and he was surprised to see that his friends had given them. His godfather had made him send gifts to all of his friends, saying that he would get gifts back and that that was what friends did, but Charlus didn't believe him. Now that he had seen that all of his friends had given him gifts, he was surprised that his godfather hadn't lied to him. He opened all the presents and was happy with what he got. Lucas got him a Hasburg Treats gift pack, which had dozens of sweets in them. Lucifer got him a pack of cards, and Henri had gotten him a very soft pillow. Selene had gotten him a pack of candy too, and Charlotte had given him a Houde toys basket, which had three French Magical games.
Fleur had given him a bracelet. It wasn't exactly a bracelet, it was more like a band. It was made of silver. There was an inscription, which was written small and in cursive - 'Friends Forever'. Charlus liked it and put it on his wrist. Fleur hadn't chosen a bracelet because she was afraid that Charlus would think it was girly and wouldn't put it on. What is the point of a gift if it isn't useful to the person being gifted?
Charlus looked around, and he didn't find any more gifts, so he grabbed his broom which he put down on the ground to unwrap the presents. He took it and rushed to the back yard to fly. Harry and Neville didn't know what they should do, so they got onto their toy brooms and they tried to go after them. They couldn't control the broom that well since they hadn't been on a toy broom that often, but they were able to keep up with Charlus since their broom was faster than him.
They went to the backyard. The forest was right behind the backyard, but it didn't immediately come. There was some empty space, and by some, there was enough to fit half a Quidditch Pitch. Charlus got onto his broom and slowly jumped up. Sirius had taught him the basics of flying a year ago when he got his first toy broom and that lesson was proving to be very helpful.
He started by pushing the ground lightly with his feet. The broom started hovering 2 meters above the ground. He leant forward very lightly, and he started going forward slowly. He was enjoying the light breeze but was greedy for more. He leant forward even more and he started speeding up. He tilted the broom up and started ascending.
He was 20 meters above when he started to get afraid. The fear of height was innate for everyone. His broom started wobbling because of his trembling hands and he looked around and saw no one. He looked down and saw that everyone was far away. He tilted his broom downward and tried to go downwards, but suddenly, the broom flipped over.
