I was up late at night before the world as I knew it came crashing down. Just like in my dream it began to happen. Something I'd never imagined, something I never thought would come into existence. It was like watching what you see at the movies come to pass. And there was no way you could stop it. That was what was happening and it didn't look like something that would be knocked off in the nearest future.
Since I had that terrible dream, I have always felt a foreboding that there was something real about it even though it was only a dream. I knew that despite the fact it had even merely been a dream, it had a lot to say about it. And I had not discovered that on time. It was so unprecedented that no one had seen it coming. No one had an inkling of what was about to happen. Even I who it had been revealed to didn't quite agree that it would ever happen.
No one knew that the world was going to fall into chaos the next moment. No one saw it coming and it was our ignorance that brought the disaster upon us. No one even knows how it happened. I was running alongside the other students who were my friends as well. Everyone was scattered around the school but was no longer themselves. They were now terrifying creatures that I could not describe. They had no reasoning and went about eating the others who hadn't turned to them.
Adrenaline kept pouring into my bloodstream and that was what had kept me alive till this point. At first when it started and then with the commotion that followed after I never thought that I would survive it. I never thought I would make it to this point alive. The only thing that enshrouded me back then was fear. I thought I was going to die. I feared death so much but it was because I refused to bow to that thought that I was saved. I thought I was going to break down when I saw the rest turning into disgusting creatures that went around, looking for those that were not like them, hoping to change the likes of us into what they were.
The thought of it sent a shudder down my spine and I vowed that I would fight this till the end. I was not going to become one of them. I was not alone. Some of us had survived these beings that were not humans. While many of us have fallen for them, the number was countless because we had to react on time. At first, it seemed like a joke but strange things soon started happening and we were running for our lives in the next second. I don't know how I have been able to run for this long. I had never run like this in my entire life. With a scream, I blew one of them aside and continued to run as I called on my friends who were also running from behind me.
I turned back to see him grab his arm. I prayed that he had not been infected and continued to run, fearing the possible worst. I screamed again as I blew two aside. I think we should count ourselves lucky that these things were not as fast as we were. If not we would have been infected like them. We had been able to survive up to this point because they were too slow and because we were the first people who had seen the incident and had reacted to it on time.
This was one of the many times that being stubborn had saved my life. I wondered if she was okay as she ran up behind me. She looked so frightened. The truth is that everyone was scared. I was scared as well but I was not scared of them, I was scared of turning into them. "Are you okay, Selena?" I asked her still running and panting. She nodded and continued. We reached the stairs and began to run up.
This was our only hope of survival. If we could get up the stairs and hide behind the space that I had already created there, then we could assure ourselves that we would be alive until the evening. The whole world was thrown into chaos. And only very few had survived it. Looking out to the skies, smoke was clouding the skies.
Explosions must have caused that, I thought. As long as the people who were supposed to take care of them turned into these creatures and lost their senses of reasoning and being human, they abandoned what they were doing and began to walk around, searching for who to turn to. Those who were alive were very lucky. Others were dead, and those who weren't so lucky were being eaten as they struggled to run for their lives. But I thought the dead ones were the luckiest.
At least they would not experience what those who had turned into them were experiencing. It was the sight of the utmost disgust. I could not stop throwing when I first saw a human being eaten. But when it came to my notice that any time I wasted could get me dead, I put the emotions behind me and started to run for my life. I turned around when I heard her grunt. One of the monsters was hot on her heels and it was about to grab her.
She turned around furiously with her knife and awaited it. She couldn't stop shaking as she stood there. Was she stupid? Why would she stop? Did she want to die like the others? I asked as I watched in disbelief as she stood there. Wasn't she aware these monsters could differentiate between those who were like them and those who were not? They had this perfect ability to do so and they all gathered and went toward the target when they noticed that there was still a living being around them.
