Haru turned to Aiden and pointed to the can sitting by his plate. “Can I try a bit?”

“Sure,” the man said, passing it to him.

Haru touched the rim of the can to his lips and then took a sip of the beer. When he swallowed, he made a face. Noah burst out laughing, and Aiden chuckled.

“Shrine Maidens do not drink,” Reo said.

“Why not?” Haru asked.

“Because when a Shrine Maiden is drunk, she’s an easy target,” Reo said. “You’re a lightweight, Haru; don’t go drinking so nonchalantly like other people.”

Aiden said, “Reo is right. Give that back please.”

Haru pouted but returned Aiden’s can of beer nonetheless.

Across the table, Mason gently touched the bite mark on his neck, and Noah said, “Shouldn’t you get that checked out? Or at least disinfect it or something?”

Mason said, “It’s fine.”

Beside Aiden, Haru played with the collar of his sweater, pulling it up even more to cover his neck.

“Are you cold?” Aiden asked.
