Summary
Out on the icy hockey rinks of Canada, Alix is the ace player of her team, something the team captain and head bâtard Lindsay never seems to appreciate. One day, after getting put through the verbal ringer by her one too many times, Alix lashes out in a nearly dangerous kerfuffle which left her the hoser on her arse. Realizing she needs to take her anger from the antlers (preferably that of the Candain Elk), she reaches out to Ezra, a sliver-tongued bad boy for help. At first, Alix is anxious around her resident prince charming. However, the more they interact, the more Alix can't help but get drawn closer to him.
Characters
Alix: Our main heroine on the ice, Alix is a withdrawn, quiet, and socially awkward mess. With an absent dad and a sculpting mom who doesn't understand her, Alix views hockey as a guiding point. As such, she will do anything to keep , even if being a rink rat, she has to get close to Ezra for some anger management.
Ezra: The popular theater kid and emo boy, Ezra is a certified keener. His slick tongue and swift conflict resolution were honed both through the homophobic bullies at his school and also his childhood. After growing up with an abusive dad, though, Ezra has developed a bit of a sore bum for his mother's new boyfriend.
Overview
You know that refreshing bit of cool water you drink before starting your day? That's what reading Hockey Girl and Emo Boy felt like. After reading If You'll Have Me, I'm glad I could pop in again to another cute romance story, this time being about a couple of cute Canucks. Faith Erin Hicks serving as both the writer/artist, I think, helps create a strong visual direction The entire comic is drenched in white, light blue, and black accented by onomotempias which, combined with the Canadian backdrop, does give the story a double-double on the relaxing feel.
Juxtaposed with the black streaks of lightning displayed in an intense aggression in Alix's initial outburst, all the more alarming. Still can't say it's all bad if it knocks a bitch down a peg or two and get's the ball rolling on a really cute dynamic. Against the trendy title Alix and Ezra are a lot more elastic than what others seem.
One is a bit of a gentle giant with a clear goal in life amongst lots of insecurities, while Ezra, despite his incredible compassion, is still largely a little flippant about how he identifies himself and his relationships. These separate viewpoints or philosophies aren't treated as awful, though; they are just beliefs that naturally get put through the paces.
This contrast leads to a very natural and comfortable dynamic that feels more real than in other books with the same topic. This is especially true since we learn more about their familial situations, particularly their estranged relationships with their fathers. If there was a common theme with HGMEB (I'm not saying that full title every time), I think it would be trying to fill yer boots or helping yourself out.
Life is always going to get in the way of what you want. It can twist you through, especially with all the Larry and Roger's. However, it doesn't mean you've got to be chained by them. Whether accepting the reality (Ezra) or taking a more staunch stance (Alix), you gotta find that avenue to keep the good times rolling. No matter who gets in the way.
Epilogue
All in all, HGMEB is a very cute and relatable YA romance I do recommend. I apologize for butchering the Canadian slang, but given my command of the English Language, you shouldn't be surprised. Still amidst the jokes, I hope you get out on the ice and check out this story. In the meantime, I'll see where the spotlight takes us next. Afterward, I will go to the little washroom, of course. That poutine was just a little messy.
